There's a red veinny thing coming out of the butt of my female glider, just wondering if anyone knows what this is? here are some pics, hopefully you can see what i'm talking about. I'm taking her to the vet tomorrow for a check-up anyway.

Thanks

Are you sure you got a female? Is it always showing or does it retract at some some point? If it does retract, I will definetelly think that it is a male and that is his penis!!! Where did you get your baby from? Was it from a reputable breeder?

Well, if she does in fact have a pouch, could it possibly be a parasite of some kind I wonder??

She is a hermaphrodite. My little girl Spryte was too (Spryte had a joey so I considered her a girl with extra parts).

There is nothing medically necessary but the odds of this little one having any joeys is very slim. "Female" hermaphrodites usually are sterile. (ok, so are the males)

But what you are seeing is a penis.

There could be other genetic "issues" going on too. Spryte was only 3 when she passed. Your little one is also very stained, she appears to need to be on a better diet and given lots of love.

Yeah, there's a chance it could be a parasite, if you don't know his/her history. Or it's very possible you have a he/she glider.

Did I PM you a list of vets for Canada? If I didn't, here is the list I have. I'd take this sweetie to the vet for a checkup.

Wow I had no idea a hermaphrodite sugar glider existed. You should still take her to the vet (like I'm sure you are)!

Hermaphrodites can happen with any species of animal (according to my vet). Even though I was pretty shocked, my one vet (that does my neuterings) wasn't at all. Dr. Bradley wasn't shocked...it was just Spryte was the first one (sugar glider) she had seen.

Topics like this is one of the MANY reasons I love this Forum! With out this many of us would have never knew there were any existing Hermaphrodite Gliders! (or just did'nt think about it!)

I hope all is well with the vet check, and good job for rescuing her/him!

Thanks Connie for the list, fortunately I go to a vet on that list smile

@BorderCollie she doesn't have a bald spot.

My vet confirmed that it was a penis yet she kept saying how odd it is and that she hasn't seen anything like it.

My glider also has constipation which my vet also found odd seeing as what gliders eat (fruits veggies and a protein staple).

Agent did the vet say she is a girl also? Or was she just missexed?

Wow, that is very interesting. Did the vet say she might have other complications or internal defects that may affect her health?

I know Spryte died young, wondering if this is always the case?
