Bourbon,

For the BML diet plan it says to feed them insects. I think I remember you telling me that this is only for cleaning their teeth and you do not need to feed them extra protein in their diet is that right? Also your diet plan calls for the shells to remain in the mixture. I remove the shells to prevent the sharp egg shells not blended from puncturing their digestive tract. How much extra calcium supplement should I add to compensate for this loss, if any?

Well I don't know the answer to this but I do know that the egg shells are for additional protein I'm pretty sure and not really for the calcium.

I think TMarie is right ~ I remember reading somewhere that the eggs hells are optional and should only be used if your blender has the ability to blend the egg shell fine enough to be eaten.

As for mealies their not a must to feed as there are some gliders who wont eat them at all and do just fine. But they are a fun treat for them and yes I do believe they clean their teeth for them As for the gliders who wont eat mealies, I'm not sure if they compensate for something else or if they just leave it.

I think my dragon would hiss fire on me if I didn't give him his morning dose of worms lol

Leaving the shell, or removing the shell does not change the BML to any extent to need supplementation. Bourbon even states now this is optional. As far as insects, that is your choice to feed them or not. Hopefully, Bourbon will stop in to answer your question's herself soon.

[:"teal"]Egg shells are composed of a protein framework, similar to the protein collagen, with inorganic mineral crystals deposited within this framework. The minerals are mainly calcium carbonate (94% of the shell) with 1% each of magnesium carbonate and calcium phosphate. The remaining 4% is the protein.

As Karin already pointed out, shells are totally optional in the BML diet. I personally quit using the shells in my batches, long ago. HTH! [/]

I spoke with Bourbon a few days ago. She and I were talking about the BML. She said that the shells are totally optional, nothing needs to be added to compensate the difference if you don't use the shells. She said that it was easier to scramble the eyes without the shell. Or to just peel them. Anyway, I hope this helps a little.

That was pretty funny...

I need help!

I have almost no clue when it comes to cooking. I tried to scramble an egg for BML using a non-stick pan... but it stuck anyway. When cooking for humans I put a bit of butter or oil in the pan to keep the egg from sticking, but I don't think that it is healthy for gliders to do that.
So, I have turned to boiling the eggs for now, but scrambling seems like it would take less time, especially if I didn't have to scrape the super-glued egg off of the pan!

How the heck do I scramble eggs?? I am almost embarrased to ask!

Thanks!

Crack one egg in a measuring cup. Whip with a fork and then put the cup with the whipped egg into the microwave for one minute. Bingo....cooked egg which is now ready for the BML mix.

Thank goodness! SugrGrrl, I thought I was the only one who had to look up directions on how to cook an egg to make my first batch of BML (actually, I confess I had to call my mother ). Well, it just goes to show how much we love our gliders. Me: microwaved box of birdseye vegetables, perhaps followed by a freezer-to-oven batch of Otis Spunkmeyer cookies (that's dinner - lunch was pizza and a coke from the geedunk at work. And breakfast? What's that?). Suggies: painstakingly prepared, home-made leadbeaters diet, accompanied by a delightful melange of fresh and frozen and vegetables, each pieace lovingly selected, and followed in the morning by a bowl of fruit smoothie. They'll probably outlive me.

I've often wondered about the egg shells too... can the gliders accually digest them? It seems like the protien in them would be unattainable anyways.

When I make BML, I don't leave the shells on all the time, but when I do, I crack it open, and put it in the microwave. When it's cooked, I stick it all in the food processor, and the egg shell bits get to bbe VERY tiny.

I hard boil my eggs. And yes, eggshells are digestable. Just make sure the blender grinds the eggshells up into tiny, tiny pieces.

The blender will grind them into tiny sharp pieces. I remove mine for that reason. The shells are safe if they are ground.

In other threads it has been mentioned than gliders, as gummivores, take food in their mouths and sort of squeeze the juice out of the food and spit out the little sickle-shaped solids. We notice the wheat germ pieces, pea shells or other fibery solids expelled. Do the egg shell pieces when blended get swallowed, or spit out? Obviously ground shells would/could get swallowed.

Alot of people stopped using the eggshells in the BML. It is not necessary. Just to be on the safe side, I would peel the egg before adding to the BML mix, and go shellless.

which is why we made the shell optional, just to be on the safe side, there are many owners out there that have used it and others that offer the shells as part of their fresh feed diet.

What I did, and no incidences mind you, is I ask if there was ANY possibility that the shell bits could hurt their digestive system, after many, replies of no need to worry 2 people said yes the possibility existed, so to be safe, I myself no longer use it. as for the nutritional value, the mix has a lot of calcium in it anyway, the so few mg that the shell offered to me is not worth the risk, also because the amount is so much lower there is no modifications needed.
