I have a set of twin joeys that are about 9wks old and very independent, eating on their own and such. I have a home lined up for the female joey, to be picked up monday. I'm still looking for a home for the male. Should I seperate the joeys from their parents and big sister now to get them used to being away from them or just leave them together until they are picked up?

It just seems like it will be more traumatic if they've never been away from mom and dad then they are whisked away to a new home. The female joey will have another joey her age that she will be paired with after introductions at her new home.

If you have a cage then I would seperate them now to make sure that they can survive with out mom and dad. This helps to put my mind at ease as well!

[:"green"]Every breeder will give you a differing opinion about this one. Personally, I always leave the joeys with the parents until they are adopted out, but I know there are many breeders that do separate them. It really is up to you and what you feel comfortable with...

I leave it up to the new owner. If they would prefer their little one(s) be seperated, I'll do just that. Otherwise, I'll leave them in with their parents until pick-up day.

I think that it is probably easier on the joeys and parents if they are suddenly and completely separated because then they can't hear or see each other so the anxiety may be more intense but it will not last as long as if they could hear and see each other.

Before I separate the joeys I handle the joeys longer and more often. Once the joeys reach their 8-week oop mark, I take them out and have them with me all day long. They are used to being separated from their parents thus it makes separating the joeys from their parents much easier.

When I separate the joeys from their parents at around 9-10 weeks OOP I take the parents' pouch and leave the joeys in the parents' pouch and give the parents a clean pouch. That way the joeys still have their parents' scents and also they don't cry for mommy and daddy as much. It has worked very well for me.

[:"green"]Excellent advice, Jen! I also handle the joeys for long periods each day before they are separated from the parents. And I also now put fleece blankets in the sleeping pouch that I send along with the joeys so that they have their parent's scent with them in their new home. It has made the separation much easier on the joeys...

Unless I am keeping them, I remove them after nine weeks. I have had three females that got so thin that the parents never had another joey. Even after they were fattened up, they never had one after being bred. Judie and I were discussing this this week that possibly the older joey might injure the teats. It is just a thought.
