#128674 - 08/05/06 11:51 PM Glider messing with wound How do I stop him???
Anonymous
Unregistered

My glider has an wound on his back that was stitched and stitches are now out. He left it alone for quite awhile but tonight I noticed it is open a little and raw around it. He is scratching at it. It would be really hard to wrap it. I thought I could wrap his back feet to stop him. What is safe that I can wrap it with? I am so upset. He was doing so good. Why would he mess with it after so long.

Wounds that are stitched begin to itch when healing. Try applying some neosporin to it and see if that does not help.

How long have the stitches been in? And when are they to be removed by the vet? Is there any drainage coming from the wound at all?

Also, how long was the wound open befor being stitched? Wounds that have been open for 24 hours or so... require drain tubes due to possible infection. No drain tubes... and infection is inside the wound it will not heal and will break open open where stitched due to tissue dying.

The stitches were put in on July 21 and taken out July 28. It was healing up nicely and being left alone until now.

The wound was there more than 24 hours. The vet said it looked like it was there for awhile which surprised me that I did not see it. He cut away tissue before stitching it.

That may be the problem then. He remove the dead tissue which was good. But with a wound that has been open for awhile... it should have drain tubes (two or three)that are stitched to the skin to allow a possible infection to drain. Drain tubes are removed in three or four days if clean. The stitches that close the wound are usually self desolving which take about a month to six weeks to completely heal.

So, sorry. But your little guy sounds like he will need a trip back to the vet. Please request the drain tubes to be put in if the vet feels the wound needs to be restitched. Oral med may be perscribed if there is an infection.

Yes, no drain tubes were put in, but it seemed to be healing really well. When he took the stitches out it was scabbed over, however when the stitches pulled out it did take some of the scab with it. It does not look deep right now, just sort of scrapped. I started giving him his meds again to try to keep it from getting infected. I will call vet. Thank you.

Also ask your vet if pain meds would be appropriate.

In most pet stores they sell a liquid bandage type of a thing for animals. It comes off by itself in a few days so you dont need to worry about washing it. You just spray it on and let it dry. It is also supposed to prevent scratching and biting as it tastes bad and makes the itching stop.

Please do not use the liquid bandage. That stuff STINGS and could cause more problems then solve. Since gliders are prone to Self Mutilation (they tend to attack what hurts) using the liquid bandage could be dangerous.
