Little Odo had to be helped over the Rainbow Bridge this morning.

Odo was born here. He looked like a little female when he was born, had a pouch. At about 6 months he started developing a bald spot and I saw a penis. Well his testicles never descended into his scrotum.

I knew the risks, testicular cancer. So I never sold him or placed him in a home.

In the last two weeks he developed a bulge in his abdomen and I thought it was one of his testicles growing and possibly becoming cancerous so I scheduled an appointment for him at the vet.

He was seen Tuesday and they aspirated a sample from the bulge. I got the call Thursday morning that it wasn't an growing testicle or abscess, it was intestinal material, diagnosis a hernia.

I made the decision yesterday to help him cross the bridge today when I got home from my job.

The choice to help a beloved pet cross the bridge is never easy, but helping Odo cross the bridge was the easiest decision I have made. Probably because I knew from the beginning that I would have to make that decision for him and I was prepared to make it.

I am waiting for his necropsy results, wondering what they will find besides the hernia. Maybe his testicles and maybe a uterus. Who knows he was a changeling after all.

It takes a great love to let go, my sympathies are still with you, as I know how heavy your heart is from a loss, even know it was the best you can do for him.

I am so sorry for your loss. That is never an easy decision, but I am sure Odo had a wonderful life with you. You both provided each other with companionship and unconditional love. heart

My condolences.

I'm so sorry to bring up such a sad occasion, but I do have a question, did Odo have a scrotum? Why did you feel he would develop cancer? I only ask because I recently adopted a glider with a penis, no scrotum, a pouch and a bald spot.

Odo was born with what looked like a pouch he was almost a year old when the scrotum finally appeared.

His testes were inside of his abdomen and were palpated by the vet. Having the testes in the abdomen keep them warm and kill the sperm, it also puts them at a higher risk of developing testicular cancer.

His necropsy is posted here: Odo's Necropsy Results

If you read it you will see they think they found one testicle but there was no evidence of a second testicle. I had asked them to see if there were any female reproductive organs inside but they found none.

The hernia is why he was euthanized, opening up a glider for that kind of surgery and bowl resection if he survived the procedure the risk of infection and self mutilation were just to high. So I made the decision to euthanize him.
