Sorry for posting here, but the rescue section is not exactly appropriate for my question:
Are there any glider sanctuaries currently operating in the United States? Sanctuaries that are willing to adopt out gliders or keep them indefinitely in a happy and healthy environment unlike a purgatorial kennel?

I have just read through many of the second chances and lessons learned section and find myself weeping like a baby, but it got me to thinking what about those gliders in need of rescue, the ones still living and in need of a second chance? It is as important to them as, if not more so than, dogs or cats that all their needs are being met. They are in certain ways, or at least they seem to me, to have more complex relationships with each other and their owners than typical pets and, again I can only use the word appear, to me similar to primates in that fashion. If my assumption is incorrect I welcome the experiential wisdom of this forum's members, but I suspect, from the cursory examination of accrued experiences here and elsewhere, that the difference between Gliders and Great apes is one not of kind but degree. This may also be true of dogs and cats, but, while both may grieve for their owners and each other, many do not and certainly of those many most do not wholly share in that mysterious complexity awarded exclusively to creatures such as Humans, Dolphins, Elephants, Gliders, and Great Apes.

However I still wonder, could we not, in this vast network of impassioned and compassionate people, have a sort of underground railroad for enslaved gliders with their North being an actual facility? I used to do this with fish (granted fish are not in the same league as gliders, but cruelty is cruelty and neglect is abuse), and if I had the same 2000 square foot, temperature controlled aquaculture facility I would start a Glider Sanctuary immediately even with what little knowledge I possess, for the compassionate owner is preferable to the desensitized oaf who bought his or her animal on a whim and, like the fate of the novelty of the newest gadget, has grown tired of it.

Anyway, these are my thoughts of the moment as an insufferable insomniac. Hopefully some of you out there are already doing this, and there is an "Aspca" of sorts for gliders.

-Nick

A post of this nature would actually be found in the Glider Talk section.

Yes, there are several folks out there that do rescue work with gliders.

Furever Gliders Furever Gliders in Georgia

Southeast Cares in Florida

And there are also a couple in Texas.

Unfortunately, many have 'tried' to be rescues and have failed. The main reason is because there is so much more to rescuing a sugar glider than people think. Not only do you need to space, you also need the time to spend with them and most importantly the funding. As a true rescue spends $$ at the vets office.

Also, there are those out there that wish to save every single glider they see on Craigslist and feel they need to be 'rescued' when in most cases, those gliders only need to be rehomed.
Just because one does not agree with the way someone else is keeping their animal, be it diet, cage size, sleeping quarters, does not mean it is a rescue situation.

FurEver Gliders is located in Atlanta GA. We have a few sanctuary gliders that are unable to be adopted out because of ongoing/long term medical issues.

While many people will jump up and yell "I am a rescue, I will take your unwanted gliders...." that is all well and good. But the hardest part of RESCUE is the cost. Each glider that we take in is vetted, neutered if its a male and fecals are done. They are then still in quarantine for 30 days. During that time they are then assessed in personality and behavior. We at FurEver Gliders have several "sanctuary" gliders that are unable to be adopted because of their ongoing or long term medical issues. The biggest hurdle for glider sanctuaries and rescues is funding. Facility space is another issue. We get calls every day with people wanting to surrender gliders. While we would love to be able to help each and everyone of those, we physically can't take all of them. The need for glider rescue is great but many people don't want to do the dirty work, they just want the "glory" of saying they are a "rescue".

Do we have organizations which raise money for these sanctuaries?

These Glider Rescues have web pages that you can learn more about them and how to make contributions.

SouthEast and Lucky Glider are both 501c3 organizations. Kingdom Kritters may be also.

Donations to 501c3 organizations are tax deductible.

FurEver Gliders is NOT 501-c-3 non profit at this time. We also do not solicit for donation, nor do we turn any away. When a surrender/rescue is adopted out from FurEver Gliders, we send the new owner with at least one sleeping pouch, a bonding pouch, more recently we have been also doing cage sets to go with the glider and any toys they may have in their cage. This is to ensure they have some of "their" stuff in their new home. The bonding pouches and cage sets are donations specifically to go with each surrender/rescue glider.
