Little over a week ago, I discovered one of my boys Squirt had his package hanging out. At first I just thought he was just showing off, but the next day he still hadn't retracted it. I made phones and got him in to the vet and got him started on meds for a UTI. Two days later I was advised by a veteran glider owner to apply preparation H and apply baby origel for pain management (he was now in a e-collar). Every 20 minutes for 6 hours straight he got the Prep H applied. It looked good and started to retract. I felt comfortable leaving him so I could get some sleep (I lathered him up with KY and Vetercyin at that point)and when I woke the next morning a large portion of the forks of his penis were necrotic. I immediately took him to the vet and my poor guy got quite a bit of his penis amputated. I was told that gliders can do very well with missing a good portion of their penis.

Two days after the surgery I went to administer meds and while he was on me he passed a blood clot.

He is currently in a e-jacket, he is eating VERY well and takes his meds like a champ. He is staying hydrated and Im confidant that he will continue to improve over the next few days.

While he was in surgery (a week ago) I had them remove his pom. He came to me with a pom on neuter. I was told that there is a connection between pom on neuters and problems later on in life with penis issues.

We still don't know if the actual problem was a UTI and the blood clot could be from the surgery or from him passing a crystal.

I still have a lot of unanswered questions as far as to why this happened but one thing I do know is that he is alive and well and that's all I could ask for smile

If anyone has any input or experience with gliders with penile amputations please feel free to contact me- this is all new territory and I'm interested in learning as much as I can about this topic.

Spencer has no penis, it is amputated to the Y. He has no problems. just FYI for those of you that may no know gliders do not urinate from the penis, they are marsupials and urinate and defacate from the cloaca. the urethra flap opens to urinate then closes. Spencer has stories here http://www.glidercentral.net/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php/topics/451255

It sounds like you have a good mentor, if you need to talk I am here. I will be praying for your little guy.

Here is something the vet gave me on where the urethral opening is on a male sugar glider.

While they don't urinate through the forks of the penis they still use the initial stalk part to urinate.

I am watching one of the boys at work he had his pen sticking out for an hour or better.. I actually was working and the only natural lube we had was corn oil ( cooking kind) I took a dab of this and rub it on gentle ( he had them out for over an hour so I was worried they would dry out) well after like 2-4 minutes later hee pooped and pulled them in and so far they not poked back out ( i first he might been flossing but after a hour and he came out and was eating I figure they might be drying some). I taking him out today cause i want to keep an eye out on him for this.

My Roo has had to have 1/2" removed from each fork. I had a biopsy done the second time. My vet said he had a tumor that was common in inbred gliders. Roo is a (PPP) Perfect Pocket Pets glider. I wish I could remember the name of the tumor. Maybe someone here would know what it's called.
Roo is now 5 1/2 years old and has had no more penis issues. He doesn't know he has anything missing, even when his mate, Abeje, is in heat.
