My husband and I are looking into getting our first gliders, and we have heard that boys tend to smell more and sometimes mark with their urine. We're looking to get a pair of girls because of this, but we found a pair we like that are a boy and a girl.

Just wanted to see what your opinions are in boys being more smelly or marking, and overall if there are benefits and cons to one sex over the other.

If the male glider is neutered he will not smell any more than the female.

ALL Gliders mark their cage and anything else they choose to with urine. Gliders are scent oriented animals and marking the cage and their belongings - including their humans - is their way of identifying everything as their own. You will get peed on by either gender.

I do not find an advantage of one gender over the other. Each glider has a unique personality all its own. Some are calm and laid back, others are explorers. I have luvbugs that like to hang out on me and I have wild explorers that get into mischief if not watched every second they are out of the cage.

Candy is right! You will get peed and pooped on a lot. My Tucker will pee on me and rub it in.

He is always cleaning and marking me.

I have to agree with Candy about the personalities, They're as unique as humans! Each glider has it's own thoughts, feelings and needs; I think they're like having a tiny, furry 6 yr. old. So much fun!

As for your question about scents; I have had both males and females and they smell the same to me. They pee and mark each other, rubbing heads on chests and chests where others have peed, that's just what they do. On a good diet with regular cage cleaning they shouldn't really have any smell.

If the male is neutered, he won't have much more of a smell than the female. Even if he's not, they don't smell much more. No where near as much as a descented ferret. It really depends on what you feed them and how often you clean the cage. diets too high in protein and insects will make them smell more musky. I wipe the cage out every evening and clean the toys about every 3 days, in stages. If you clean it all at once then they will go overboard remarking. Stressed gliders also tend to exude more oils and mark more but once they calm down the smell will lessen. You will get peed on by both.

All that being said, you should definitely neuter the male. They can have litters of up to 3 at a time (usually just 1 or 2) and can become pregnant and have more babies in then pouch before the others are even weaned. They can also hold fertilized eggs for up to one year. One of the gliders I know just had a baby turn 8 weeks old and 3 days later had another baby going in and out of pouch. Her mate is known to kill joeys so she hadn't had contact with a male in over two months.

They all have very different personalities and smells, though. Maybe I'm just sensitive to smell but we sell gliders where I work. If someone has had a glider out on them I can actually smell the person and identify which of the gliders they were playing with. Especially with Jewels since we spoil her with crickets; they're her favorite. smile

Gliders are little individuals just like kids, each will have their own personality. I find that girl/neutered boy and neutered boy/boy pairings work best, only because girls can bicker more in my own personal experience.

Peeing and pooping happens the most when they first wake up, so let them move about their cage and do their business for a while before getting them out and you'll generally avoid the majority of what's been saved up during sleep time.

However they will mark, pee and poop on you at will in general and that's something completely normal.
