Hello,

Well, it is Day 2 of having our new glider and yikes! He's smelly! Well, his cage is. So much for not smelling as much as hamsters.

I'm looking into air cleaners. One that has great reviews has an ionizer. Are ionizers safe to use around sugar gliders?

Ionizers are not safe. If you can find one that has the option to turn it off would be best. You may not like the ionizer either, to some, like me, it makes my sinuses burn.

I don't have males, but he might just be over marking his territory. Gliders like their smell and know it's their home. He may just be extra nervous due to a new home. A complete clean may make him mark even more. If you can find the source of where he is marking most, I would partly clean with vinegar water.

The smell is worst when he runs on his wheel, so I'll wipe that down.

Thank you for the info. I had a feeling an ionizer was a bad idea.

Hello!
I have been using a diffuser with a very pure essential oil blend in it. It kills germs over a few hours time (depending on the type of diffuser you buy) and is deemed safe for gliders by a vet that incorporates different essential oils in her treatments. There are only a couple places I would buy the oils from, to make sure there aren't any additive that could harm your babies...doterra is one and the blend is onguard through them, through Edensgarden it's called 4 thieves, and through young living it's called Thieves. Personally I buy from EG because it's cheaper and great quality. This will help with the smell and the germs.
Good luck!

I've been trying to learn about essential oils. I'll have to look into that further. I know you have to know what you're doing with them, so I need to make sure I understand it. smile

On the air cleaners, are UV lights bad...if you had it located where the glider can't see it? I found an air cleaner, but it has a UV light for killing germs. It says you can turn off that feature, but you know how that goes. I would end up ordering it and when it arrives, I wouldn't be able to turn off that feature.

I don't really know much about the essential oils other than they were intended as a healing oil originally.

IMO, some smell is just part of owning gliders. When you have an intact male, you can't expect to have no smell no matter how good you are at keeping things clean and tidy. He just isn't going to have his house all sweet smelling. Isn't happening shakehead

With neutered males and females, you have a better chance if you keep their drop pan cleaned out at least every other day, wipe down the cage bars, swap out their toys on a regular basis and give them clean pouches. NEVER DO THIS ALL AT ONCE or you will have a marking war on your hands shock

Gliders have the uncanny ability to poop/pee when they run. Something we can't do :rofl2: So, yes, their wheel is going to retain some sort of smell regardless of what kind of wheel you have 'cause most gliders heart that wheel. Cleaning it on a regular basis is also needed, and I'll admit, it isn't easy and it's usually gross tounge

Oils, candles, sprays - just mask odors. If you want to invest in an air purifier, that is the way I would go as it benefits the whole house. Do a google search as there are many and they prices vary greatly. Just a suggestion.

I ordered an air cleaner and it arrives tomorrow. It's specifically for pet odors, so I'm hopeful it will do the trick.

I wiped down his wheel and the bottom of the cage, as well as cleaned out the tray (which I was doing every other day, maybe I'll do it every day). This helped. I did n't wipe down the sides of the cage or anything.
