Anything good that actually comes from all this? How is this beneficial to the animal? What is the logic for it? Please enlighten me.

I'm not the expert on this, but since sugar gliders fall in to exotics, marsupials and I'm not sure what else, from what I understand it falls to dept of conservations hands to make these regulations per state.

They tend to make regulations that generically cover certain "non indigenous " animals . Ones that if turned loose in the wild could thrive, therefore causing an upset in the local natural ecosystem.

Also taking animals in from the wild like a opossum and turning it in to a pet. There are laws in place to protect them and keep them in the wild.

Many legislators do not know specifically what a sugar glider is. And haven't considered any research because it is just 1 species out of thousands. That's when the "voters" of that state (or city) must submit adequate documentation to educate them. Still some states stand behind dept of conservation.

Feral exotics are a menace in certain areas like pythons in the everglades. People turn them loose when they can't care for them anymore, and now they are the state of Florida's problem.

I'm sure I missed something, here, so you who have been here longer, please add more info or correct me. I hope this makes sense.

I told the wife I do NOT want to breed gliders. Why? there seems to be PLENTY of gliders looking for good homes on the internet. some people buy them then, just like with dogs and cats, give them up. But we at least of the ASPCA and other organizations to handle all these ownerless pets. with sugar gliders its not so easy to just hand them over to the shelter.
So I can see how some states could say they don't want this problem of unwanted gliders dropped at the shelters if they make them legal.

That is my opinion on having bans, but this is America, home of the FREE. So I wouldn't agree with the ban unless it was for the protection of citizens.

You are absolutely correct, Dawn. There are many states where animals have been brought in that are were commonly known there and have indeed upset the ecosystem.

Florida with exotic snakes that have been turned loose by owners when they got too big for them to handle. Now they are out of control in the Everglades as well as other places.

Hawaii also has some unwanted animals that have caused major problems.

These are just a couple of examples.

Yeah, I'm all for the welfare of the Animals/ protection of ecosystems etc. There just seems to be inconsistency in the laws as to location etc.
