Hi all,
so my boys have been with me a few months now, and we're getting along pretty well in the bonding department, so I want to introduce more out of cage time to them. Not just tent time, I want to teach them how to play in and around my apartment. My big concern is the kitchen. My apartment isn't quite a studio/bachelor, it has a bedroom, but the kitchen, living, and dining rooms are all pretty much one big L-shaped room. I can close the doors to bed and bath rooms and the cracks are small enough and the doors close together enough that I can easily see if any little monsters try to get in there!
So my kitchen is in the shorter section of the L - and it has no door. It also has no toe kicks under the cabinets, unfinished flooring under them (concrete floors with tons of cracks and holes that lead God knows where), a stove they could get under, a fridge - basically it's a death trap!
Has anyone else had experiences with making a safe area in an otherwise very open concept house?
All I can think of is a baby gate - and it would have to be a very big one, and they could still easily climb it. Same with shower curtains!

Maybe I should just move and get them their own bedroom? cool

Having free access to the entire apartment is just to dangerous. Besides the motor in the fridge you have the wiring for the stove and other things, plus any holes for pipes if they are not flush right to the pipe they can get behind the walls.

Many people have a bedroom just for the gliders, mine share the second bedroom with my parrots. I don't let them have free reign of the room, as the parrots look at the gliders and think they are having squirrel for dinner and the gliders look at the parrots and think they are getting chicken for dinner.

A tent is the safest place to play with your gliders, then put them back into the safety of their cage for the night when you sleep or work and can't supervise them.

They are like 2 year olds they are into everything.

Oh no, I didn't mean I wanted them to have access to the whole place - I guess I wasn't clear enough in my description of the house. I want them to haver supervised access to my living room/dining room area which I feel is safe for them when supervised.
But because I don't have a door to block off the kitchen, I was wondering if anyone had suggestions for coralling them into the rooms I've decided safe! They're so fast, and if you chase, they run faster, so if they get going that way it's too hard to get them snatched back up without panicking!
I'd love to be able to have a full safe room for them, and maybe one day when I can afford a two bedroom I can do that! As it is, my bedroom and bathroom are almost as dangerous as my kitchen!

I think she totally understood, and is saying since you can't block everything off to make the "room" safe, then the best bet is to not do it at all. It only takes one second for something bad to happen that you will regret. Better to remain safe in the tent and keep your suggies safe, than to let them have a bigger open spot that isn't safe and could cause, in the worst case, death to them.

Maybe look at upgrading to a larger tent to allow more room, but I agree with Feather (Kim) and her assessment on the situation.

Same issue as hollypop for the most part. Was curious if I were able to put up a material up to block the entrance to the kitchen, like on a sliding screen door. I'm not saying that material due to claws snagging, but any thoughts?
