I am unsure if this is the correct forum to post this in as it is mostly a general questions.

Hello everyone,

We are slowly starting to prepare ourselves to add 2 sugar gliders to our family. Any and all suggestions are more than welcomed. I've done quite a bit of research and still am as this is new territory for us. We currently do not have any gliders lined up but are preparing before contacting the breeder we have in mind. We have compiled a small list of items that are required - we have not bought anything yet.

Here are some things on our list so far.

Cage - We are looking to build something very similar to this but would love some input. Here is the link. I find that the reviews have much better pictures for viewing. We are also planning on getting a smaller cage for cleaning purposes or in case we need it.

As for diet, I'm thinking of going with Critterlove Complete. It seems to come quite recommended from many other sugar glider forums and posts that we have read. Anyone familiar with this diet? If so, how do you prep and store. How/when do you feed your gliders? I know that a glider diet is one of the most important things and I want to make sure they get the best that we can give them.
We are also planning on feeding them a few mealworms a week, no more than 2-3.

Stealth wheel - This is the only website that I've seen most people link when it comes to these wheels. Are these good and are they the only ones available?
atticworx.com/1Stealth%20Wheels.htm

emergency kit - Kind of like the one below
www.spinzoneglobal.com/Bag-First-AidCareKit_p_42.html

We will be purchasing multiple bonding pouches, vines, foraging/enrichment toys, etc. We would love to hear what you guys have for toys/foraging toys. I looked online a lot but I'm not 100% what would be good to get.

I am looking for some information about water bottles vs. water bowls. Which do you think is better? Do you have both or just the one? Why?

What are some of the best websites to purchase glider items? Which ones to stay away from? We are from Canada and we usually end up paying hefty shipping fees depending on the delivery provider.

That is all I can think of for now... as previously stated any and all information welcomed! I am sure that I am missing a few items.

Thank you

A few quick comments.

That cage appears to be huge, think about how you will clean it. At some point you would probably need to do more that just a wipe down of it, but something you want to think about for sure.

The Critter Lover diet is what I use for our gliders, they all seem to like it. The protein mix is easy to make, especially the complete. As for the mixes, they are easy enough to make, and as for storing I make either a 1/2 or 1/4 batch, which is a lot still, and then freeze that in to multiple bags. I most recently did a 1/4 batch of 3 of the mixes and they produced, at least for me, about 3 gallon size freezer bags about 2/3 full each. I freeze it in the bags and then take it out each night before the gliders wake up to let it thaw out.

I also freeze the complete mix in a set of silicone ice cube trays. Each slot on our tray holds more than 2 tablespoons, so I put 2 Tbsp's in each slot and then that becomes one cube per glider pair per night, so very easy for me to do.

I'll try and type more later, and i'm sure others will give feedback as well.

Phil

I have no experience building a cage, so that definitely looks like a very complicated project to me. Kuddos to you for being able to do something like it.

Would be on the top of my list as a feeding plan choice. Be sure to feed as directed :thumb2:

There are others out there, however, the Stealth or Treadmill would be my first choice.

I would suggest turning this question into a separate post in this forum to get answers. There are so many different options, and it will get lost in this post wink

I am looking for some information about water bottles vs. water bowls. Which do you think is better? Do you have both or just the one? Why?

I would suggest the same with this question. Different post in this forum.

What are some of the best websites to purchase glider items? Which ones to stay away from? We are from Canada and we usually end up paying hefty shipping fees depending on the delivery provider.

Check out CritterLove . I know she ships all over the world and is a full service vendor not just diet products. You might find everything you need in one place.

That is all I can think of for now... as previously stated any and all information welcomed! I am sure that I am missing a few items.

Thank you

I would like to offer you one more source of information that I (personally) found incredibly helpful: SunCoast Newsletter Archive

I did not replace the information & opinions to be discovered here with the information; instead I used Ms. Lisa's newsletters as a foundation & these forums with an amazing amount of experience to expand upon them. I humbly offer it only as another information source, one which helped me immensely. Besides, 'Arnold' is hilarious.

Thank you very much everyone. This forum has been very informative and every day I learn something new!

I tried signing up to the e-mail notification from SunCoast Sugar Glider and it would appear that the 'subscribe' button that redirects the link doesn't work. I did send an e-mail to request to be signed up though smile

EDIT: After sending the request via e-mail I received a notification that "Delivery to the following recipient failed permanently" frown

Josianne,

Ms. Lisa's newsletter is currently intermittent & far between. What I sent you to was the archive & I would encourage you to read through that. I, personally, really hope she resumes Sun Coast's newsletter soon, but until then there is already so much information shared.

Happy reading!
