Hi, this is my second post about a similar question. I purchased 2 sugar gliders in February. They were 10 weeks old, assuming oop. I have always kept them together when handling and carrying in my pouch. The only time I attempted to carry them separately, it had a pretty bad result. The larger of my two crawled into the pouch, so I just kept it in the pouch alone. The other one went back to sleep in the cage. The one I had in the pouch absolutely had a fit!! Almost like a child having a tantrum!! It was awful. I then tried letting the other one in also, that helped for about two minutes, then it was still angry. I put them both back. Waited a few hours, changed my carrying pouch and started over. They are fine now, but do I ALWAYS have to keep them together? I would like to just have one out at a time if possible.. it's less conspicuous. Thank you in advance for any advice. April

It appears they don't like to be separated which is a good thing until you want to carry/hold them separately as you described.

It may take some time, but I would start with short stints apart progressing to longer times. Give each one as equal time as possible or see who tolerates the time apart better.

You really just need to see how the gliders tolerate being apart. I really think with time you can accomplish your goal.

So it would be okay to carry them separately? The larger one had a huge fit!! It started biting at the pouch pretty violently. I felt really bad about it. Maybe I should try it with the smaller of the two. Even if they get upset, it's okay to keep trying? I don't want to do anything that's bad for them. Thank you for your advice. April

Apparently the larger one does not like to be disturbed during the daytime sleeping time. Some gliders simply don't. They don't like any disturbance when they are supposed to be sleeping. This may be what is happening with your larger glider.

You may want to try with the other one and see what happens. Let your larger glider continue sleeping in the cage pouch undisturbed.

Thank you again! The larger glider is actually the one that comes to the carrying pouch the quickest! That's how I ended up trying with it first! The only way to get the smaller one out is going to be to actually block the bigger one!! It's quick to notice I'm around, and hurried out to see what I'm doing, the smaller one is usually a little late! Haha, thank you again. So I'm supposing it's okay to have them out separately, if it gets upset like before, do I put it back, or keep it out anyway? Thank you, April

If it gets upset, I would put it back. You don't want to stress them out just for the sake of carrying them around. Hopefully, repeating the process will get them used to being out and moving, but it may take a very long time. Just be patient.

Sorry if I misunderstood which one doesn't like being taken out.

I think they actually look forward to coming out, and hanging out with me, because they get an apple or other yummy treats, but it got upset when I only took out one. I'm going to try again tomorrow and see if it helps, I'll try to get the smaller one. Thank you again! April

Yeah, they have bonded to each other and when together, comfort each other.

My Fiona loves alone time. Dot would worry herself that Fiona wasn't coming back. After a few weeks she realized Fiona would return and Dot would finally sleep alone in the cage.

Fiona bonded to us quickly. Dot took about 9 months to bond. A whole nother story...

Thank you for that Dawn! So if I continue gradually, it might go okay!! That's good to know. I may need to switch the names, as I can't figure out which is the boy. I really thought it was the bigger one, but it sure looks like that one has a possible pouch... I'm going to try to get the smaller one out today.. it's going to be a challenge, as the bigger one hurries out first!! Or.. maybe I'll just give in, get them both out!! Hahaha.. I'm such a pushover!!

My girl Winky gets very anxious if her brother Yoda isn't in the pouch with her. He is happy to go off and curl up on his own from time to time, but she gets distressed when alone.

You could try for a compromise - when the big one comes into the pouch, just stand there holding the pouch in your hands, while its still in the cage. That might encourage the little one to come join the big one, given enough time to approach slowly. They are all about slow and quiet.

I just saw the response!! They are both very happy to get into the pouch, it just seems that the bigger one, which I figured out IS the female, is always hyper aware of what I'm doing. So even during the day, if I enter the room, she immediately starts chirping. And she makes purring noises. The little boy is always happy to come out, but she's always first. I got them out yesterday, went into the bathroom with them.. one of them got between my shoulder blades and was nipping at me. I couldn't get it away, because it would scoot away when I got my hands close. Someone suggested leaning into the wall, so it couldn't get back there.. I'm thinking to try a thicker t shirt instead of a tank top. I just don't want to upset them. Now I'm full of scratches.. look like I was in a war with a cat!!

Oh yea, I hear you about the scratches! Now I always suit up before morning play time. Long pants, top with sleeves, and a big heavy robe over that leaves me pretty well protected. Sometimes they will crawl up the inside of my sleeve and race around my torso under the robe, which is why layers of protection are so important. wink

Why doesn't this site show me that I have a response to a question? I'm learning to cover up when they are out, but it seems sad, to not let them crawl around as they please! I was hoping for them to at some point be able to be loose on me, so they could just hang out without being zipped up. Also, is it bad if my little shih tzus come in contact with them? Thanks again!!

When you come to the board after being away, there should be little red numbers in paratheses beside threads which have new responses. No red number means no new replies.

I also notice your avatar has disappeared unless it is something on my end. You may want to check that out to see if all is well on your end.

Hi, I don't know how to look up threads. I've never been on a site like this. Sorry.. I'm a little stupid about this stuff. I made a avatar yesterday, and used it, but now I can't seem to get it to work. Some days I just have a brain fart.. ugh .. thank you

"Threads" are what we call discussions or topics. This Handling separately topic you started is called a "thread" or topic. Just a different name for the same thing. Absolutely confusing :dizzy:

I seem to be able to see things differently when I'm not logged in. I'm able to see responses and a lot of newly posted topics. When I log on, it's difficult for me to find the same thing. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I suppose il learn. Thank you for your patience trying to help me.
