#148448 - 09/20/06 10:44 AM Very Quick "Ice-cubed" Darcy's Diet Question

I've been lurking around here for about a week or so doing my research for my two glider boys that I'm picking up tomorrow (finally, yay!). They are both 10 months old.

I originally thought of using the BML diet, but have recently switched (in my planning) to the Darcy's diet. I'm going to make a batch up tonight and wondered:

1 "Iced-ensure-mix" cube = how many tablespoons? 2?
How long will the frozen mix keep?

Are you asking how much is each cube in a tray? They're different sizes but I think they are usually 2 tbsp

I've been feeding Darcy's diet for a while and I've never heard of freezing it. I'm not really sure why you would need to since it doesn't contain anything that spoils. I buy packs of Ensure and keep them in the pantry. I just pull one out, add the calcium, shake it up, pour some in their bowl, and then put the bottle in the fridge and use it nightly until gone.

Hm. Okay. I guess it must have been mental seeping over from where I'd heard of freezing BML. Guess y'all answered my question anyway. Thanks!

question- how long does the ensure last in the fridge? 2 of our gliders are getting small doses of ensure as a supplement per the vet for health issues.. I've been tossing each bottle after a week... but that is using less then half the bottle...

Khyricat- I called the customer service number on the Ensure bottle and totally confused the poor girl who answered the phone. I asked how many days the Ensure is good for in the fridge after it's been opened. She said it's only good for two days in the fridge after you open it and drink out of the bottle. I tried to explain to her that no germy lips ever touch the bottle because I feed it to a couple little critters who get it poured into a bowl. She seemed completely confounded by my statement and just repeated again that the Ensure is good for 48 hours after you first drink out of the bottle.

I think I go through about one bottle every six days and I've never had a problem keeping it in the fridge for that long. I agree with you that after a week in the fridge it's probably best to throw it out just to be safe.

Khyricat,
Ensure can be frozen. In the past I've frozen it in portions for Stryder because I was afraid to use it after just being refrigerated. It looks like if you are throwing away more than half a can, it would be cost effective for you to freeze small portions in ice trays to get out as needed. It's not real easy to get out of the trays, but a little prying with a knife will do the trick.

[:"#333333"] I only have one suggie that eats darcys and I freeze 2 bottles in a container and that lasts a while. I noticed that if you leave an opened bottle in the fridge for very long that it starts to taste bad so thats when I started freezing it. I thought everyone that fed darcys froze the ensure, ive never heard of just keeping it in the fridge. But, since I freeze it in a container, I have to let it defrost before I can scoop some out cuz it freezes rock solid so I am going to start using ice trays. I'd like to hear what other people that feed darcys do with the ensure.[/]

thanks guys.. I think I'll start freezing it in small portions, then keeping it in the fridge for a few days once defrosted.. we use about 6-7 cc's per day right now.. and that will go DOWN not up...

Freezing it in ice trays seems like the better choice to me. My reasoning behind this is simple...
You have to add calcium to the ensure. IF you just put it in a large container to freeze, wouldn't the calcium have time to settle to the bottom of the container before it freezes making the top portion not contain the calcium it should? By mixing it up and pouring it straight into the trays in serving size, even if the calcium settles, it still has the appropriate amount of calcium per seving.

As for getting it back out of the ice tray...run some water over the back side of the tray for a minute or so and it will loosen the cubes from the tray (works for just about anything you freeze in ice trays).

I agree with what Dancing said about the trays. I only have 1 hand so getting food out of trays can at times be difficult. If the hot water doesn't work, I put hot water on the bottom then run a butter knife around the edges and everything just pops out. HTH

Ensure is the staple item for the Darcy's diet. Darcy's diet was developed for a little sick glider named Lord Darcy. It saved Lord Darcy's life when he wouldn't/couldn't eat anything else.

Many people have used Darcy's diet with their healthy gliders with success. (I personally had different results though).

Ensure should NOT be give to dehydrated gliders though. When a glider is dehydrated, their body will pull moisture out from what ever source it can. When that source is Ensure, it can leave behind a paste that can impact the glider.

It sounds like everyone has a handle on getting frozen goodies out of ice cube trays, but here's a link from another post on some nifty (though pricey) ice cube trays: Freeze & Press Ice Cube Tray.

Know also that you glider may gain weight on Darcy’s Sugar Glider Diet. If this is what your glider needs to do, this is the diet for you!

Is it necessary to add extra calcium to ensure that is labled "high calcium"? I've seen 3 types 1.Plain Ensure,
2. High Protein and 3. High Calcium also, if freezing the ensure does this break down any of the mineral/vitamin that are in it? Thank you

Boy, the expert on Ensure and Darcy's diet is Donna (saharafox; BTW, happy birthday , Donna!).

I think I read that you do not need or want to add extra calcium if you get the high-calcium Ensure.

I don't know if freezing it breaks down the minerals and vitamins. I'm guessing not. The BML (which I use) has the vitamins and calcium mixed in, and is intended to be kept frozen.

Hopefully someone will come along with more knowledge.
