#16597 - 01/15/04 12:24 PM Glider health question

I was wondering what could cause my female glider to get a bump underneath her eye and have cloudy eyes? I just recently purchased her, could it be from stress? Or could it be a buildup of fluid from hitting an object hard, like a branch? Also, what type of hard food should be feed during the day? Any help would be grateful. Thanks

An abcess in the facial area, "lumpy jaw" or another gliders bite could all cause this, I am unsure about the cloudy eyes. Can she still see? How old is she? She really, really needs to see a vet asap. I can't help but think this could possibly be fatal if left on it's own...please make an appointment to have her checked out asap, and please keep us updated on how she is doing and what the vet says. We will keep her in our thoughts....

Here is a link to glider diets...

My guess she has a severe facial infection that has spread to her eyes. She needs vet care ASAP. Infections like this can be very painfull as well as life threatening .....if left untreated.

Let us know how it goes with the vet exam.

There are several diets to choose from. I personally feed the BML diet plan. Check out the diet Forum.

I just recently got her and did introduce her to others. I didn't see the bump until two days after they had been together. Her eyes are not bad at all, she has woke up twice and had sleep looking material just covering the bottom of her eye. She then just rubs it off. She has been eating great and comes out to play on her own as usual. The lump doesn't hurt her because I have rubbed it. I can't take her to the vet because the only glider one I have heard of lives 3hrs from me and I am in college most of the day. My local vet believes it just to be a build up from a fight or from hitting a blunt object. If you can tell me any thing else to help me and Marge out it would be much appreciated. Thanks

Whatever it is, it will probably need to be treated with antibiotics. She really needs to get to a vet. I totally understand about being in college and not having a glider vet in town, but this definately sounds like an infection, and only a vet will be able to get you meds to clear it up. If she is not seen by a vet, it will only get worse and end up costing you even more time and money. It is best to always get them to the vet at the first sign of a problem.

Hey franzen..

Is there no one that can drive her in for you whilst you're in college? A parent, a relative, a friend? I know it's not what you want to hear.. no want likes to be surprised with sudden expenses.. but it's part of owning a sugar glider. A vast majority of us have all been surprised.

I should also add.. just because she looks perky and happy doesn't mean she is. In a colony, if a glider acts sick or ill, the others will kill it or run it off for the benefit of the entire colony. If allowed to remain, it might infect the entire colony and destroy all within. By killing the infected, it's Mother Nature's way of saying "for the better of the majority." As a result, a gliders instinct is to try very hard to hide their illnesses until they are too sick to hide it anymore. By this point, you most likely have a glider knocking at death's door. If there's a behaviour change, obvious swelling, bleeding, limping, or anything out of character.. get to the vet.

Please, for her sake, arrange for someone to take her to the vet. The situation is a serious one.

Also.. whilst she has the swelling, it might be wise to get her on a softer food, as it may be painful to eat.. Check out the diet link provided above.
