Glider Greetings:

Lots of people, myself included, wanted a little more detail about the BML diet that is so popular here. Dr. Bruce Ross (Mr. Ellen...) did an analysis several years ago and presented it as a talk at a SGGA meeting. His work is/was frequently referred to and was very helpful; but it caused some confusion because it was done for an older version of the BML diet. So I decided to do an updated analysis for the current version. A while ago, I posted the nutritional analysis of the BML MIX and, in this post, I am adding the information for the fruit component of the diet.

There are a few explanatory comments necessary to help you understand some of what I did. Firstly, let me say this work represents some rough "ballpark" numbers that, hopefully, will give you a little better understanding of how the BML diet works without pretending to be a comprehensive analysis. I am not a nutritional scientist, just a curious glider owner with a penchant for fooling around with a calculator. There are thousands, if not millions, of possible combinations of fruits and veggies so, practically speaking, it is impossible for me to do a thorough and complete analysis.

For the fruit analysis, I arbitrarily chose a combination of seven fruits that are commonly available in your local grocery store. Using different combinations of fruits will result in slightly different end results; but the overall picture will be essentially the same. In the first chart, I compiled figures from the USDA National Nutritional Database, for one cup of each fruit. It is a dry weight analysis meaning that the water content is not included in the calculation. This is a standard method of doing this type of analysis. Just for fun, I compiled figures for the water content and those numbers are shown in the second and third charts. And finally, there is a chart with figures that have been adjusted to amounts that would actually be used with a single batch of the BML mix.

I'm working on the veggie figures, now, and should have those available in the not too distant future. Then we can put all of these numbers together and see what shakes out.

As usual, I'll be glad to answer any questions you may have or try to find answers for those questions I can't answer.

I was just wondering Randy, I have one pair of extremely picky glider's...who actually refuse to eat much fresh fruit at all...rare occasion. I offer 1tbsp. of babyfood fruit, and 1tbsp. fresh each night, however, most often they only touch the babyfood fruit. (if I eliminate it totally, they won't eat any fruit). That's beside the point, but would you say there is a noticable difference from the fresh fruit analysis and babyfood fruit? If so, better, worse, same? Sometimes I wonder if BML is the best diet for the picky glider's, considering all they won't eat.
Thanks!

Karin

Karin, great question! I know there always seem to be concerns over the baby foods and their quality compared to frozen or fresh fruits and vegetables, or meats. And it is really hard to get those picky little ones to eat enough of anything to get the proper nutrition into them.

Thanks Randy for doing all this dietary research, it is really so helpful to all of us.

[:"blue"]I would be very interested in this answer also as I have one little girl who 95% of the time will not eat fresh or frozen fruit [/]

I haven't examined the figures comparing fresh fruits and veggies and unfortunately, i've got so many things on "my 2DO list" that I won't be looking at that particular issue for quite a while. Intuitively, one might expect the fresh foods to be more nutritious; but, you are 100% correct in stating that's of no value if they won't eat it!!!

If you are otherwise satisfied with the BML diet, you might try taking about half of the fruits/veggies and mashing them up and mixing them in with the BML mix. Feed the other half to your gliders as is. Try feeding the f/v first and add the BML with veggies an hour or two later. Maybe that will encourage them to eat their veggies/fruit???

As to whether BML is the best diet, all of the well known glider diets that I am aware of have significant fruit and veggie components. No reason to believe that gliders will eat fruits and veggies any more enthusiastically on one diet than another. Somehow you just have to figure out a way to get them to eat their fruits and veggies. Although probably not an ideal solution, if they will eat it all blended together, that's a better solution than not eating at all. Wish i had a better answer.....sometimes these little guys can be frustrating!!!

Thanks Randy! I can appreciate the time/effort involved in figuring out ratios, but when you need an answer, you go to the best . I have much much patience, so when/if you have the time, super. So many are in this situation though with the babyfood, and making it a total subsitute for fresh fruits just doesn't sound like a good idea to me anyway. One thing I have not tried, is the mushing it all together in the BML...so I will give that a try.

ok just curious alot of people seem to put down the baby food idea for fruits and veggies but the bml diet also contains alot of processed baby foods if one was to put so much processed preserved food into the bml would it really matter if the fruits came from a jar ? i'm just so confused on all the diet issues everyone has an opinion on whats bad and good and some diets conflict with their own opinions I guess this a little off topic ...anyways

frog:

One reason for preferring fresh fruits and veggies is that they give your gliders something to chew on whereas the babyfood is just mush that gives no textural variety.

Thanks Randy! I have started offering some of their fruits and veggies during our playtime too, they seem to eat them better while they are out "foraging" than when they are in their cage.
