Ok ya'll, I have been sending emails for a couple months now to different australian zoos and exotic vets to find out different diets that they feed down there. Just to compare, because obviously we do not have some of the same things here as they do. Anyway, without much luck I finally heard back from one who sent me a copy of the diet that they feed at the Healesville Sanctuary. I was rather surprised to see the menu and thought I would share with you all and get your feedback. I am NOT promoting this diet plan in anyway, just wanting to share. First I will post the first email I received from him. The article he is discussing it the one that can be found here, http://www.petswithhands.com/Diet.htm

Several weeks went by and I sent another email asking him for the diet plan. this is the email he sent back.

Hello Peggy,

Thankyou for the reminder. The diet sheet is sitting on my desk.

There are a few terms in the diet that may be specific to the Australian
context so I have asked the vets to fax me a copy of the breakdown of
contents which I shall pass on to you when it arrives ie nectar mix.

In the mean time here is the diet. There may be enough information here.

For more information contact SMTP:HSKeepers@zoo.org.au and this will
connect you to the Healesville Sanctuary Keepers.

Good Luck

Scott

Now for the diet plan he sent to me...

Healesville Sanctuary

diet Sheet

Species: Sugar Glider: Petaurus breviceps

Natural diet: Insects, pollen, nectar, sap, lerps

Daily diet (per animal): 1 Dog chow/Eukanuba. (This is made by Iams (iams) which is a US company so you should be able to get a US equivalent. It is a veterinary grade dog chow

I emailed him again with a few other questions and comments and will let you all know when and if I receive a response.

Cool, nice to see how their native lands handle them. Can't wait for the next installment. It'd be cool to get some of those plants they feed to keep around the house, i'll see if i can locate some seeds on the net! I appreciate your efforts at gettin this info <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumb.gif" alt="" />

Than why is he still corresponding with me and gave me an email addy straight to the Healesville Sanctuary? If it was no longer housing sugar gliders, it would make no sense to be asked so many questions about things. They even sent me over a thing for sprouting and growing your own seeds that they supply the gliders with....
hmmmm interesting!!

Hi Peggy
I don't know whom you are speaking with in Oz, They have given out info for many years, I would ask them if they are housing any sugar gliders at this time, sugar gliders are not exotics to them lol).
My info is a couple of years old & from a friend & highly respected & published veterinarian who had been at the Healesville Sanctuary for many years - Rosemary Booth - She is now in Queensland.
Rosie & myself tackeled a touchy issue (Sugar gliders teeth) on Glider Central a few years back.
Healesville Sanctuary has been the leader in the care of several endangered Oz species thru the years - especially the endangered Leadbeaters possum.

Good luck with your Aussy flora, I have been growing Oz flora for my gliders for several years

I have also received that information from Healesville. In fact, their website says that they no longer have gliders. The diet has been around for a long time, by Dr. Rosemary Booth, as Pockets said.

For those who don't know Pockets: she knows more about gliders in Oz than most of us put together. Hearing about her vast library of sugar glider material and contacts always leaves me in some envy. And besides, she's just a delightful person. Good to see you posting again, Pockets!

I stand corrected & am very happy to hear that <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/littleglider.gif" alt="" />'s are residing at Healesville once again, as I stated my info was from a very trusted & reliable source but was a bit old.

My info as of Feb 2004 is the following -

Healesville has -
Petaurus breviceps breviceps - 1 male & 2 females

Healesville also aides in injured native wildlife so we would also have to figure that into the picture, as any given day injured <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/littleglider.gif" alt="" />'s may be lucky enough to find themselves brought in for treatment.
