I don't know any of you very well. I've been a glider owner for 14 months, but I've been here alot, just don't post alot. But, my very first glider, Sami, is in heaven now. She was oop 10-1-02, so she was just starting her life. We have 2 cats, and one of them got her. I have a small bedroom that is the "girls" room, because I have another girl, Susie, who is oop 5-1-03. But the bedroom is all theirs: cages, toys, branches, etc. It's where we have playtime, and it's also so the other animals, cats & dogs, can't get them. But somehow, my black cat sneaked into the room & hid. We had playtime for about 1 1/2 hours, and the girls got into a wrestling match. They had these every now & then, but I looked down & saw the $!%*! cat!!!!! I threw him out of the room, but it was too late. I picked her up, cradled her in my hand, and she gasped a couple of times, and was gone. OH, how I blame myself!! WHY DIDN'T I SEE THAT DARN CAT? I had everything just so, so my little girls would be safe, and I somehow let her down. God, she was so sweet. I could cuddle with her, and I just miss her so much. Susie, my girl who's left, was barely hurt. I took her to the vet, and she just had a little hair missing on her forhead. I have antibiotics I have to inject into her mealies for the next 10 days, but I am worried about her. She spends all day & most of the night in her bag. She comes out to eat & drink, and I can coax her out to play for a few minutes at a time, but then it's right back in the bag. I can't see how she can be depressed, because all Sami did was chase her around! They didn't get along that great; Sami was first, and Susie invaded her territory! They had separate cages, and Sami was always marking everything: Susie's cage, she would even pull on Susie's bag & pull it thru the bars so she could rub on it! I'm sure Susie's just traumatized. She seems scared to come out. She's eating & drinking, so that's good. pees & poops ok, too. Should I get the bonding pouch out again & start carrying her around again? I just want her to feel safe. Oh, how I miss my first baby!! It's hard just coming into this room for the last 2 nights. Someone give me some advice! How could I be so attached to something I only had for 14 months? I almost feel like I ran over my own child in the driveway!! It's not the cat's fault: he was just being a cat, but I SOOOO want to adopt him out! I can't even look at him. Sorry for the long story. Thanks for listening.

Sobbing in Kansas,
Anita

i hate to read these stories again and again,. if it were me the cat would go for a long drive somewhere in the middle of nowhere. but i would get another glider since your girl is probably depressed alone. just be careful with the dogs too.

I'm sooooo sorry!!!! Accidents happen, no matter how careful we are. I have two dogs, one that would eat them first chance he got. Luckily mine have figured out how to avoid him if they get out. You already know it's not the cat's fault. Granted, yes, you should have checked and double checked the room, but stuff happens that we have no control over.
I would start carrying your remaining little girl to help her thru this lonely time for her, even tho they were in separate cages, I'm sure this is a VERY difficult time for her. She probably thought she the victim since she was out and right there when it happened. I would give her tons of extra love, BUT they do notice something like this major of a change in their environment. She's probably staying in her pouch to feel safe from the cat. Good luck, and hugs, don't blame the kitty.

14 months is a long time my dear...and it doesn't matter if it had been 14 days or 14 years...you loved your baby and it is hard. Sugar gliders are wonderful, loving animals and losing any kind of animal that you are attached to is hard. May time heal your pain. And don't call yourself a horrible mom. Your baby was loved very much during the time that you had her. Just make sure to give your other little one lots and lots of love. She is probably really scared. Even though Sami and her never really got along, she knows that something happened to Sami and she is scared. Animals are smarter than we give them credit for. I know you must be very angry at your kitty. You must not stay mad at him though. I know it is hard, but he didn't really know any better. A dog of mine ate my bird when I was younger. It was really sad, but dogs and kitties are predatory animals and so things happen, although they are sad.

We are thinking about you and sending lots of love in your direction.

I'm so sorry to hear about Sami Losing any pet is soooo hard. Susie needs a lot of love now. Your cat was just being a cat I hope your heart heals quickly knowing that Sami is at the Bridge, watching over you and Susie

Peggy, it makes it easier to give them their meds. I was actually the one that put it on the board as a way to give them meds without them fighting it sooo hard!

Thank you all for your kind words. Even though I cry alot, and cry even more when I read your kindess, it does help. I still feel incredibly guilty, but I have to be strong for my Susie. She was out tonight for almost 45 minutes! That's a real improvement over the last 3 nights. She is staying close to me, and I've been trying to give her extra love. Her appetite has been fine, but the staying out of her pouch for longer tonight really gives me hope that she will be ok. As for the cat...I still can't really look at him, but realize he's just being a cat, and believe you me...THAT won't happen again, if I have to cage him every night! Just thought I'd give y'all an update, and to thank you so very much for your kindness. Everyone seems to know everyone else on here, and I wasn't sure what kind of response I'd get, not being on much. Anyway, I have the awful task of taking Sami's cage down & re-arranging things. Oh, here come those darn tears again. But knowing there are people out there who understand, and don't blame me, I know I can get thru it. And maybe soon Susie can have a new friend. And she can be top-dog this time! Thanks again!

Anita

I'm so sorry for your loss, I think a lot of us have pets that don't mix, we just do the best we can and realize that accidents do happen. I have four cats and love them dearly but I know that anything can happen and when it does it's usually in a heartbeat if you know what I mean. Just keep your Suzie close to you and try to find a new friend soon

Dear SAMIGIRL,

My Shami also died in a cat accident. I know EXACTLY how you are feeling now, especially towards your cat. Only time will tell if you will be able to get over that with your cat. Stick it out though, it is not your cat's fault, even if you decide to give it up. My little Fox who was Shami's mate is still a horny bachelor, maybe we can hook up? LOL No just kidding, I am here to tell you that life WILL get better, just hang in there and don't beat yourself up. That won't help you remember your little one. That's what you want to do now. Cherish your memories and maybe get a memorial something. I got a framed picture of Shami with the Rainbow Bridge printed next to it and it is hanging on my wall where I see it every day and can remember what a wonderful glider she was. Try the memorial. It may help. I am so sorry for your loss, give little Suzie all the smooches she can stand from me....

My thoughts are with you at this time...How very sad. Don't blame yourself, accidents like this happen,,we never know the reason, but we then learn from this. Thanks so much for posting your sad news as a reminder for us to do a double check. Don't blame your kitty, she was just being a kitty, and kitty's do these things. If you find you can't handle having the cat, find a nice home for her, she does not understand that what she did was wrong. Hopefully you will be able to find a friend for your glider to help her forget. Take care!!!

Oh, Anita! How terribly sad! You truly do love your sugar gliders and want the best for them. That's clear from the special room you've created for them, as well as the time you devote to them. Sami is now smiling down on you; she knows you loved her and doesn't blame you. You gave her a wonderful life in the months you've shared together. Give extra love and hugs to Susie, and be kind to yourself, as well.

Thank you all so much for more kind words! They really do help!! Here's another update: Susie is spending more time out of her pouch with me, and I can see she's coming out of her trauma. Here's the news: I haven't had the heart to take down Sami's cage, and this morning, Susie was crawling all over it. So, out of a hunch, I opened the door, and she went right in. She crawled all around, even went in Sami's house. Well, I thought she may move in, so I put a clean fleece in there, but no. Seems she just misses her friend? She was in there for about 20 minutes, but ended up back in her pouch in her own cage to sleep this morning B4 I went to work. Maybe all that chasing around WAS really just a game. Do y'all think she misses Sami? I'm just so incredulous, because it seemed Susie was just scared of Sami, being chased around, and when they WOULD meet up, just a wrestling match & Susie would crab a storm! I don't know. Maybe I SHOULD get her a new friend soon. Well, thanks again for all your kind words & encouragement. I hope I've helped at least one person: LOOK OUT FOR THE CATS!!!!!!! No matter how much you think things are locked down, they are darn sneaky!

I often have people ask me if they can get a glider if they have cats. I know a person who has cats and gliders. Her cats don’t have claws and sit on top of the glider cage and just watch the gliders. They are very laid back cats.

I don’t know how to answer the question when I read a story like yours. I think it would be hard with the more people that live in your home. The more humans the more error there is to someone leaving the door open. You can’t watch dog every human in your house. Now that I have thought out that situation, I just thought of an idea!

There are wireless devices that you can put on your door that transmit an alarm that would signal you that the door is open. There are some that just transmit a chime sound. An alarm would scare the gliders, but a chime would not be that bad. It could serve as a preventative measure to be sure you know when the door is opened. Some doors the hardware does not snap the doors shut well and even a wind current could suck the door open. The device would not cover a cat slipping in at the same time you open the door, but I am sure you will have your eyes wide open for that. Another way is to lock the door and keep the key above the door.

As I said in my private mail to you, I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I hope you decide to find a new mate. Time will heal some, but it won't be the same. You will always love and remember Sami.
