[:"hotpink"] I've finally gotten ahold of my head to come post. Meeko, the glider that had the UTI and was bald when he came to me was doing so much better, his hair is growing back and he seems happy. This afternoon when I took him out I completely lost it when I saw a hole the size of Texas at the base of his tail/his anal area. My vet was closed and after being turned down by the closest emergency vet (she said, "we don't know what to do with those!") I was referred to another and he really didn't know much but he was willing to help (he called another vet to find out what he could give him, he said he didn't know anything topical that he was sure wouldn't hurt him so he didn't risk it). He put him under local anesthesia and put 2 metal staples in his tail to close the wound. He is on Baytril that he gets twice a day, he really hates me for sticking that stuff down him. Anyway, he couldn't do much, he was going to leave it alone but I think he changed his mind after he saw my face when he said it could wait... In 2-3 days he wants me to see my regular vet and in 10 days the staples are to come out.

I'm really sad about this, he was doing so well! I am afraid that he is going to tear himself apart when I have him neutered. [/]

Oh, how sad. I do hope he put an e-collar on him and gave you some torb to administer for pain.

So sorry to hear that... hopefully he will do better.. I am very glad the vet was able to help... I hate when a vet says, we have no idea how to treat that sorta animal.. sad to hear those words but not many vets specialize in exotics. I know there is a vet office in Fairfax, VA that SPECIFICALLY specializes in exotics. **HUGS TO MEEKO AND YOU**

Oh, Linda! How sad, especially that the first vet turned you away. I just can't fathom... I'm glad you found a vet, and that you were able to find help for little Meeko. Do get him in an e-collar, and if your vet didn't give you any, as suggested, do get him pain meds. I can't imagine metal staples being any fun, either. Poor little fella. Hugs to both of you.

Self mutilation forum

Self Mutilation Site

your chances of finding a vet that is familiar with this is slim.

please be sure you put an e-collar on him, the plans are on the links, count on him spending the rest of his life in one. so be sure you have the mole foam or double layer of mole skin on it. it will require 2 people to put it on, or can be done at the vets office.

Please fill out the questionnaire then please contact either Myself or Mary asap.

At about 6:00 I have an over the phone consultation with my vet. I am looking forward to hearing what he thinks is best for Meeko. As he is a wonderful vet, he has experience with gliders because he used to rescue them himself. We'll probably set up a day so that he can look at Meeko and help us out.

In the mean time, Meeko is sleeping. He fought with me for quite awhile before I got the Baytril down him.

[:"blue"] My vet is going to see him tomorrow, my mom and sister are taking him in since I'll be at work. In the mean time he told me to continue the Baytril and he told me how to clean his wound. I bought some Chlorhexidine and diluted it with water, then I put it in a squirt like bottle (they put hair dye in them and cut the top off) and while my aunt was holding Meeko in a towel I gently squeezed the bottle so that it would clean it. Then I filled the whole thing and cleaned the Chlorhexidine off with water. It did a good cleaning job and I haven't seen Meeko touch it. He is putting up less of a fight now when it comes to his medicine.. Anyway I tried the e-collar over and over again and it kept failing. My vet says he has some that they use for birds, so hopefully he can get one on him.

Unfortunately I no longer have a friend for Meeko, the guy forgot that she was on hold and sold her yesterday.

He is being spoiled, hopefully he can get better!!! [/]

I had to work a lot longer than expected tonight, my mom pushed his appointment back for tomorrow at 5:00 so that I can take him. He hasn't been licking it or chewing at it since I cleaned it. I'll keep you guys updated.

Thanks everyone.

My vet had some sort of emergency, and just my luck had to change my appointment once again. We are seeing the vet early this morning.

I'm still giving Meeko his Baytril, and the great news is that he hasn't touched it since I cleaned it and it looks clear and clean. He hasn't been making any noises either. I am going to clean it again this morning, I'm not cleaning it everyday because I don't want to make it raw.

Hopefully there will be more good news in a matter of hours.

Sorry for the delay of an update!!!

Meeko's UA and fecal float are both clear. He is doing so much better, he has completely stopped licking himself. The vet wants me to keep giving him his Baytril and to continue cleaning his tail every 2-3 days until the medicine is gone. I am happy to say that Meeko is in high spirits and his tail is healing, 1/2 of it is scabbed over! He's doing great, I'm so happy because I don't want to lose it again and I hate seeing him in pain. The hair on his neck is also nearly completely grown back, which is another excellent sign! When his tail is healed he is going to be neutered, and in the mean time my vet HIGHLY suggests getting him a friend. I am still searching for an older female. The only single girl that I have tried to bite him in the nose, she is not friendly towards other gliders...She is young and set in her ways!

I'll keep updating you, in a few days I will post pictures comparing his neck and his tail. You can ask Chey about the ones of his neck, she has seen them!

What happened to his neck? Rubbed raw from the e-collar? Sorry, I missed it somehow.

Glad to hear all is going well. Unbeleivable how a glider will mutilate himself from a UTI or even constipation...but I see it happen a lot here on the board.

Keep up the great nursing skills with this little fella.

When he came to me his neck was bald. When I took him to the vet he said that it was more than likely the irritation of trying to get to his penis because it kept bothering him. My aunt told me she never noticed it ... After his UTI had been treated he wasn't rolling in the pouch and irritating it. If it was him overgrooming, it has stopped.

Thank goodness!

I have some concerns with this little guy, for starts you had originally stated
This afternoon when I took him out I completely lost it when I saw a hole the size of Texas at the base of his tail/his anal area.

and you don't have an e-collar on him. you also stated that the hair is gone from around his neck. this is ver common with gliders that have been in e-collars.

I also am concerned that you haven't filled out the questionairre and contacted someone with experience in this area.

if it is only a uti. and all seems okay.. then what I don't understand is why nothing is being said regarding the damage to the cloacal area are well as the tail.

IF this is a self mutilator in the sense of the ones we deal with specifically, then this is a reoccurring problem, which would explain why he has done this again after the first uti was taken care of.

I assume you got this glider from your aunt, as you stated

Quote:

My aunt told me she never noticed it

privately can you tell me who your aunt is, to see if we have a record of this gliders history regarding the SM.

it is not uncommon for the sm's to be cyclic. but each time they get worse regarding the damage.

also nothing was said about a strange sound that they make. does yours do this as well.

all this would would been discussed with you in private if you would have contacted one of us.

if possible could you please post pictures of both his cloacal area, as well as the hair missing off of his neck.
