I need advice. And I know I can get support from you guys. Althea and her 3 month oop babies escaped the other day. Somehow Althea got into the apartment next door. Today they told me they thought she was a rodent, so they hit her, killed her and put her in the bushes. I found her and am burying her tomorrow. How could anyone do this?? These are clearly not rodents, and how could you kill a helpless creature anyways? She was my fav. i could take her anywhere. What will this do to her mate and the babies? I was in the process of seperating the babies, but I should hold off now huh? Now I have 3 males. Do I need to get Reece another mate? Will he go into depression? Seeing he hasnt bonded to me, and has no one but the babies.. What do I do now? I'm so upset? Do I report this abuse? please email me at landlady06@cs.com or post.. thanks

I am sooo sorry to hear about your loss! I cant believe that anyone would kill an animal, if they were so afraid of the glider they should have captured her and brought her back to you. I guess you can probably leave the babies with their daddy for a little bit longer! I would definately get him another mate, and when you do then move the babies to a cage of their own! I really hope everything goes well with you and your gliders!

I'm so so sorry to hear this... it truly breaks my heart to read posts like this... this is why I take mine to schools and places of the such to teach people about gliders and a VAST amount of other animals...
Yet at the local SPCA there was a glider there that was labeled as a rodent... they knew nothing otherwise...
Our hearts are with you!
------------------
Jaccobb
Kyle Donna
Pharaoh & Amen Ra
Decaf coffie is for people who just don't get it...

I would get another make in time. Right now making shure the joeys EAT, POOP, and PEE by themself is important. Reporting the abuse my not do a thing. More then likely they will laugh, you did let it get away and it did end up in the nab,'s house. (I am very tired so please exscuse any booboo's) I am sorry and I do think they should have said sorry. I am sorry too. I do know though the animal was in their house so YES I think that whoever you report it to will agree with the nab. I wish you luck ans you can try but don't get upset if this is the answer you get. that must have been the worst thing in the whole world for you. i can't say anything but i'm sorry, and i hope that everything goes perfect for you from now on. ask your neighbors if they would mind helping pay for your next. poor little one... i can't imagine anyone that would mistake a glider for a rat. i mean, really. that kind of stuff should only happen in cartoonland.

I am so sorry for your loss []http://www.sugarglider.net/ubb/images/icons/frown.gif[/]. I had a ferret that escaped once and a neighbor thought she was a weasel and hit her in the head with a hoe. Fortunately he didn't kill her. People are very ignorant regarding many animals. Hopefully we can continue to educate them. I am sorry for your loss. It seems alot of uneducated people don't know what gliders are...they probably truly thought she was a rodent. []http://www.sugarglider.net/ubb/sad.gif[/] As for the joeys, how far oop are they? As for the father, expect him to greive. spend as much time as possible with all of them. I would get him a mate as soon as possible...it will help him tremedously.
------------------
A peaceful place...or so it looks from space...a closer look reveals the human race....

Im sorry to hear about your loss []http://www.sugarglider.net/ubb/images/icons/frown.gif[/].But I have an idea that might help stop the confusion take a picture of your gliders and put it on your door with a cute little note like (caution glider playground inside []http://www.sugarglider.net/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif[/]) then people would know what they look like and that they are your pets that may decrease the chance of an accident happening.
------------------
I have to agree with John Derek on this one, although you could attempt to report it, they would probably just blame you for letting it escape. As much as I love the little guys, two months ago I didn't know what they looked like and cannot begin to imagine how I would react if one scurried across my floor. I am so sorry for your loss, however I don't think reporting it will do you any good, and will probably only make you feel worse because your sentiments will not be shared by others.
I am so very sorry for your tragic loss! []http://www.sugarglider.net/ubb/sad.gif[/] I agree with the others that reporting it will probably not help. Asking them to help monitarily probably won't help either, but you could mention it to them. Chances are they will refuse or they would have offered to help replace it as soon as they found out that they had killed someone's pet. I must say that I think taz npoochie's idea is great.

Not to sound dumb or uncaring.... but...
In your post they said they thought it was a rodent and they killed it... but nothing about if they were sorry about it... or not...
I can understand reporting them ( not sure what good it would do there ) if they were uncaring about it... but if they were truly sorry about it that's another thing!
In our old apt the neighbor's "rat" got out... he was a pet but DANG he looked like a local! he was in the common hall and I called the Mgmt. to come get it... to my happiness the owner passed me asking about her pet befor they got there...
I would have felt like [censored] if they would have "offed" it...

------------------
Jaccobb
Kyle Donna
Pharaoh & Amen Ra
Decaf coffie is for people who just don't get it...

I'm sooo sorry to hear about your loss. I hate it when these little guys get hurt. []http://www.sugarglider.net/ubb/sad.gif[/] Just like everyone else who's wondering, did your neighbor apologize and feel sorry? I would do something about this, even if it didn't help. Good Luck. i totally can relate to your loss. i give you heart felt sympathy. such things are difficult to deal with. []http://www.sugarglider.net/ubb/images/icons/frown.gif[/] try to remeber the good times your glider brought you.
during the summer i go back home to work. i brought my glider with me but nevert told my dad i had them. one day my little Chaos got out of his cage(i still don't know how). my dad is an early riser and saw my glider running around. he too thought it was a rodent or squirrel and chased it out the door. i spent the next two two searching for him, telling me neighbours- but i never foung him. i try not to imagine the horrible death he might have faced.
the best suggestion, if oyr neighbours were trluy sorry, is to ak if they will help with the cost of your next glider- if you choose to get one.

i am also very sorry about your loss. however, please try to see the other side of this (and man do i know it is hard). i hate to play devil's advocate, but according to your post, your neighbors thought it was a rodent and did what most people (maybe even myself i must say) would do if they saw a rodent. they (and i am just guessing this) had no intention on killing a glider, none the less a pet.
i think that as long as your joeys are healthy and growing it wouldn't hurt to get a new mate for your boy. again, i am truly sorry that you have to experience this ordeal and know that our prayers are with you.
carrie
------------------
never underestimate the power of denial.

Thank you everyone so much. I am so sad. I can't beleive this happened to my Althea. I probably wont report them, but I will send them info on sugar gliders, and tell them I should replace her and ask for some help. They did say sorry. they just wanted her out of the house, but I wouldn't kill a spider. And I'm quickly realizing that many people would. I can't imagine her running across the window then being hit with a broom. Thats heartless. Well, The babies are old enough, I'm only worried about Reece. Its hard to find hand raised gliders in NH. Anyone have any connections? Thanks again.

Pockets I never thought of that either but for me I live in a house in the middle of nowhere []http://www.sugarglider.net/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif[/].I agree with Rosie though maybe just put a picture on a bulletin board so people would know just in case, there are alot of people who have no idea what they are, alot of my friends assume they are just another type of rodent. Then I have to explain the difference. So sorry to hear about your loss. It did, however, bring to mind how I would react to an unwelcome visitor in my own home. Sadly, many people have no idea what a sugarglider is, or how much they mean to the people they live with. A rat, or other rodent,(which I can see someone not in the know mistaking a glider to be one), would definitely not be welcome at my ponderosa. Granted, I would not attempt to kill it, but it would definitely be unwelcome.
Try to take this with a grain of salt. Know I love my little guys as much as the rest of you. I just thought this might help you understand the mentality of those without the terminal disease of glideritis.

omygosh, that is so terrible, I am so very very sorry
I know how it feels to lose a pet in such cruel way.. my husky was killed in a hit and run 6 yrs ago and I still have nightmares til this day

I can't believe you neighbor would do something like this, even if it IS a rodent.. why do they have to kill it? There are lots of humane ways to do this.
I am just so sorry for your loss!!
