Well as some of you may have read Sophia more than likely got into a fight with her cage mates on Friday night. She had a small wound on her nose and also her eye was injured. I took her to the vet on Saturday and the vet said her upper eye lid looked bruised and she gave her some antibiotic eye drops. I think there appears to be a small wound on the eye lid itself. Anyways her eye lid is droopy and from the top it appears to be swollen. She does not bother the area at all and it does not seem to be causing her any pain. She plays and eats and is her happy sweet self. Anyways the swelling does not appear to have gone done and the eye lid is still droopy. I attempted to take some pictures this morning of it but they are really bad so I'm sorry about the quality. She was not very happy about it and just wanted to crawl back in my bra. Anyways I'd like to get your opinion on this and what you think of it? It's her left eye. Thanks!

It does look more droopy than her other eye, & looks like there may still be a little bit of swelling, but it was hard to tell. If it continues to look droopy after another day or two, you may want to take her back to the vets for a recheck. She may need an oral med in addition to the drops.

Looking at the pictures, I'd say get her back to the vet today and insist on an oral antibiotic in addition to the drops. Having been on the drops since Friday, the swelling should have gone down some since then. Since it hasn't, then a doubled effort is in order at this point.
Please keep us posted...

She's actually been on the antibiotic drops since Saturday evening-that was the first time we gave them to her. She went to the vet Saturday afternoon. So should we see what it looks like tomorrow and if there is no improvement get her in tomorrow then? Do you think that the swelling is from an infection? Wouldn't there normally be some sort of discharge with an infection? I guess I'm just worried that it's something more that what can be fixed with antibiotics. Thanks Suz! smile

I know that in people eyelids (and lips) take significantly longer for the swelling to go down...mostly because they never are "rested".....discharge and the attitude of the glider are probably extremely important...animals suffering from eye issues will be completely different animals....noninteractive and "fussing" with the eye etc......I would agree with Suz and a visit to the vet is always a good idea but hopefully this will help you sleep a little better...

Thanks Elizabeth. She was already taken to the vet on Saturday. They just gave her some antibiotic eye drops and didn't seem too concerned with it. I guess I figured the swelling would have gone down some by now but maybe it does take longer for these types of injuries to heal...I'm hoping you are right. confused I will see what it looks like tomorrow and if the swelling has not gone down it sounds like we may be making another trip to vet. I just didn't have any idea how long the swelling would last and if it's normal. I guess I'll ask them tomorrow if I have to call how long I can expect the swelling to last too. Maybe she will just say it's normal? I just hate this. upset My poor baby girl. But like I've said she doesn't bother it at all and I've been keeping her on me all day and watching her at night until I go to bed.

Dez,
Sorry I didn't get back on here last night to answer your question in a timely manner shakehead
In my experience, after 2-3 days, the swelling should be significantly reduced, even on the eyelid. So, yes, if the swelling is still just as bad today, I would bring her in to the vet for another check and to get on oral antibiotics in addition to the drops. The swelling won't necessarily produce a discharge unless it gets too big to hold the infection inside any longer, and then it will produce a fistula that will drain. Sometimes, the vet may need to actually lance the swelling to induce the drainage, but your vet is the only one who can determine if that becomes necessary or not... Hopefully it won't be in this case.
Keep up the great work, you're doing very well with taking care of your little one thumb

I agree with Suz. With Friday being Day 1, the swelling should be noticeably reduced by at least yesterday (Monday, day 4). The medication given the day after an injury is actually there to prevent infection, not treat it, so I'm not counting the day you started meds as day 1. The swelling is from inflammation due to the injury itself and should gradually go down. If it doesn't, that could mean it is becoming infected, perhaps due to a bacteria which is not sensitive to the particular antibiotic they gave you.

Did the vet put in a yellow dye, called fluorescein and shine a blue light on her eye when she orginally examined her? That helps to make eye injuries show up.

Good morning!
Well I was able to get a good look at her eye this morning when she was sleeping in my hand. From the top the eye is looking much better as far as the swelling. There is still some swelling there but not nearly as bad as it was. The eye lid is still droopy though. Do you know what that could be caused by? Could it be from the bruising in the upper eye lid that the vet was talking about? I guess it would make sense if there is still some swelling and bruising there. Also Peeperkeeper the vet did do something with a light in her eye. I don't remember what she called it and I wasn't back there when they did it but I did see them turn off the lights. She said she was able to look at the cornea and she saw no damage. It sounds like she did the same thing you are talking about.

Dez,
I'm glad to hear the swelling has started to go down. The droopiness could be from residual bruising and swelling. Keeping a pictorial history of her progress will help you to be sure that she really is making progress, too. Since the vet did examine her cornea, then I'm sure that she did the retinoscopy with fluoroscein that Sundra was asking about thumb
Please continue to keep us updated and if you notice any regression, get her to the vet for further treatment.
