#210344 - 01/31/07 02:18 AM HELP glider face is very swollen

I just looked in on my adult male "Willy" & saw that his face is very swollen! I fed him a mealworm and he grabed it quick as ever and did not seem to have a problem eating it. I have no money to take him to a vet, what should I do? Please help, It lookes painful.

Well, you need to get him into a vet. See if you can find a vet that has payment plans or if you can take out a loan from a friend or a parent.

A swollen face could be due to a number of things...could be an abcess below the surface due to infection, swelling due to infection of a previous injury, etc.

Frankly, there is not going to be much first aid you can do that will help your glider and vet care is needed. It probably is painful for him and is unfair for him not to see a vet. You need to get him in as soon as you can.

Let us know how it goes.

Facial swelling is very serious and needs immediate Veterinary attention. Do not delay in getting Willy to a vet. Although finances are tight for you, you will have to make some kind of arrangements so that Willy can be treated, otherwise, he may not survive. Please get him to a vet ASAP!
I'm going to move this over to Health & Hygiene now. Please post an update for us over there after you've gotten Willy the proper veterinary care.
Take care. hug2

The most common thing that facial swelling ends up being is usually an abcess. If not treated by a vet or in a timely manner, and abcess can and will become systemic, meaning the infection will get into the blood stream. Consequently, it could rupture leaving a pretty nasty wound behind. It is far cheaper to get him treated now, than waiting. Waiting will either increase cost to treat, or if the infection spreads, could kill the glider. Sorry to sound so grim, but and swelling can be dangerous and potentially life threatening.
Please get him to a vet ASAP.

I am taking him in to a vet this morning. Cost be [censored], I can't let him suffer. I will let you all know what happens. Thanks to all for your help not only for myself but for keeping this forum going. I have referred to it many times & often found reliable information.

Thank you.
