Does anyone know if it is ok to put the bendy ropes that you can buy at most pet shops, (they screw onto the cage from the outside) in the washing machine? I'm going to try it a little later today. I used to have a fleece little jungle- it was like a canopy with lots of fleece leaves hanging from it, but I've noticed that the more fleece I put in the cage, the stinkier it gets...I feel like I have to take down all the fleece everyother day (which is a huge hassle) just so I can keep the smell minimal. So I took out most of her fleece- she still has her little fleece tent and her pouches of course, but it was time for some house cleaning.

I used to do it with my birds but after awhile they do start to fray.

PureAyre is wonderful for the smell!

I would put them in the dishwasher - they'd get sterilized, but they wouldn't bounce around as much. thumb

Could someone please provide links? I've heard of the cage product that makes cleaning easier (by coating the cage, I think?). And what is Pure Ayre? Is that a deoderizer only, or does it clean, too?
Thanks!

Pure Ayre is just a deodorizer not a cleaner .. I have also read about something you spray onto the cage… but I will not use it… luckily I can take mine out side every other week or so and do a total scrub down …

Oh … meant to add that I an not sure about the safety of those bird cord things … I used them for my birds and they frayed a lot … and I think that would concern me with gliders and their nails …

I just wanted to add - if you're buying a product that makes gunk not stick to the cage, I would make sure it doen't have Teflon in it as Teflon is toxic to small animals. thumb

Cage Sheild:

Haven't personally used this, but have heard good things about it. You can find it at:
http://www.sugar-gliders.com/cage-shield.htm

They also sell the Pure-Ayre there:

Cage shield works great. smile

Do you just have one little girl? If so, she shouldn't have a smell like that. What diet is she on? diet can make all the difference in how a glider can smell. If you have a male in with her and are constantly washing everything, he will scent mark everything like crazy making it much worse.

It's best not to wash everything at once. Cage one week, few toys, then pouches next week and leave the blankies unwashed so they don't scent up the pouch bad. (unless the blankies are nasty of course)

Super Pet Cage Clean is another really good product to use. Its not too costly neither and I love the smell of it. I use it in my store to clean the animals cages out.

However, here at home for my gliders I use clorox wipes and once every other week I do a really good cage clean. thumb

I bought it online and it's not all that great. sugar gliders smell that's all there is to it. the more you clean the more the mark it down. i only clean the cage sets (pouches, toys, hammocks, etc.) once a week and the cage it's self i take out side each week or two to clean down. And i clean the tray every other day. they still smell but that's just one of the reasons i have them in thier own room too.

Cage shield sounds really interesting. Wish it listed its ingredients though.

I agree that one little suggie girl should not smell so badly that the fleece should need washing every day and I think the question of why she smells so strongly needs to be addressed.

I would first look at the diet. Suggies on an improper diet sometimes develop an extraordinary stink.

Some people might be more sensitive to smells then others... my mother has the most sensitive noise I know, and I know if she smelled my gliders she wouldn't believe I would choose to keep such a animal... sometimes it can someone's tollerance level for smells...

I don't mind the gliders "smell" but have a indoor kitty with a litterbox... Yuck! LOL
