I have a multi-faceted story/question, and I'm not 100% sure it should go here, but I thought it would fit here best. lol.

Anyway, a little backstory. My first female, Aspen, has had joeys twice. Both twins. She rejected them both, I tried to save them, but lost the two boys, and then one tiny girl. But I did save one female, Sophie, who is now ten weeks old. I couldn't handle the heartbreak of anymore rejected joeys from her, so when I lost the third joey (while desperately trying to save the fourth) I took Daddy, Versai in to the vet to be neutered. That was on April 22nd of this year. So I thought that Mamma, Dad, and Sophie (like I said, now ten weeks old, but still on the small side) could live happily together for the rest of their lives.

And now to the new development. lol. Last night, Versai, going on three months after he was neutered, was seriously mating with Aspen, and succeeding. This went on for hours, and I thought, well, he isn't going to do any harm, since he's neutered, so I let them be. But after a couple hours of mating, Aspen got frustrated and started fighting off his advances. It was almost as if Versai looked around, and tried to weigh his options and started after my sweet little barely weaned Sophie. *sigh* Well of course, that wasnt going to happen. Not if I could help it. It was way too late to post about it, there were only like three people on this morning, lol, so I thought I'd wait and ask about it today, but in the meantime, Versai stayed in an empty cage right next door to his wife and daughter. I hated to do it to him, but I didn't see any other way around it.

The three of them are sleeping peacefully now, he's not worried about mating with either one of them during the afternoon hours, but I was hoping to hear some feedback before tonight. I'm not sure WHAT to do with him. I can't neuter him twice!! I didn't even think they were supposed to have this kind of "drive" when they've been neutered. And I feel terrible about seperating. But I'd do it again in a heartbeat to spare Sophie any trauma...

So...yikes. lol. Which way do I turn from here? What do I do about Versai mating, even though he's been neutered? Is he able to, three months after being snipped, PRODUCE? (Lord Knows, Aspen [or Me] don't need the heartbreak again). Should I seperate them? Should I put Sophie in a cage by herself to spare her being mated/bred/raped before she's got a clue what that even is? So many questions, I know. lol. But I just totally wasn't expecting this to even be an issue, so now I'm at a loss for what to do. Help!?

Thanks to everyone in advance. I know I can't get better advice that from glider people who've been there before. ThankYou! LuvAmes.

It is a little odd that he still has such a sex drive, but if the neutering took he is not able to impregnate her at all. As long as she goes into heat I would imagine he will try to mate with her even being neutered. I could be wrong here as I have never had a neutered male. I don't think he can imprgnate her this long after the operation though, that is if the neutering took right. I know I have heard of neuterings not taking properly and the male being able to still impregnate a female and the vet has to go back in and do it right. This might not be the case with your guy though. Maybe he still has some strong hormones in him and those haven't all died down completely yet and will in time. He could also be a glider that has always had a high level of hormones and neutering lowered them, but not enough to kill his sex drive. However, he can't impregnate. The females always seem to get irritate with their mates when they drag on the mating like they do so I would say this was normal behavior for a female. I would go ahead and keep them together and see what happens. If she gets pregnant the neutering didn't take and you might want to talk to your vet about that. I'd hate to see them go through that again as well, but how else do you know if his neutering took or not? I would be interested in hearing what other people that have neutered males have to say. Do neutered males always mate when their females are in estrus? or is this abnormal for a neutered male this long after a neutering? My friend has a neutered male and he has never mated with his female and it's the female that won't leave him alone, but he has been neutered since he was 8 weeks oop. If they ever mated she never has caugth them doing it. I can't wait to hear what the owners of neutered males that are with a female has to say as I have always been interested in this.

ThankYou so much Danielle for thinking this out with me. I always learn more than I knew when I think out loud here and let everyone else think with me. lol.

Yeah, I was assuming (maybe mistakenly so) that Versai couldn't impregnate Aspen, but I was surprised to even see that he was trying. You're quite right about one thing though, I am certain. Versai is exactly what you were describing when you said he could have had a high level of hormones. He most certainly DID. He scented like crazy and seriously smelled far worse than my other two males together. It was almost unbearable to be honest. lol. And he still smells fairl potent, even neutered. But his head scent gland (the bald spot anyway) is no longer noticeable. I figure it's fine if Aspen and Versai stay together. They're pretty bonded and I would hate to seperate them indefinitely, (unless of course he's still able to impregnate Aspen, SOMEhow), because she is not and probably never will be a good mother. And I don't know that I have it in me to make it through nine weeks of raising another joey as my own. That was one of the hardest things I have EVER had to do.

ANYway, I think my first and foremost concern is Sophie. I don't have an adequate cage at the moment to home a glider permantently, just one empty, and it's a small one for temporary living quarters. I was hoping and expecting to keep Sophie with her Mom and Dad indefinitely, but what to do if her neutered Daddy finds her sexually "interesting" way sooner than she should be doing such a thing, and not at ALL with her Dad. Ugh. lol. I don't know what to make of the entire situation now. I am grateful for the opinions and ideas though, if anyone has any.

[:"magenta"]yes, i can understand the concern, as adult males have been known to rape and kill younger females. but if you separate them, sophie could die from loneliness! it seems to be a no-win situation. i do not know what you should do! sorry i cannot be of more help! [/]

I'm not real sure he should be with her until she is sexually mature if he is still wanting to mate like that either. There is a small chance that he could do something to her I suppose. I would think it's really small as you notice that most males really don't try to mate with their mates unles they are in estrus, but there has always been that small chance that they will. I am not sure what I would do in this type of situation either. Sorry I can't help. I hope someone that has had experience with something like this will come along.

It IS a dilemna, isn't it, Danielle? lol. Well I will just keep an eagle eye on them until we see how things develope, OR until I hear something from someone experienced in these kind of matters. You brought up a very good point though, if it's the cycle of adult females that bring a male to do the things he does, Sophie shouldn't intice him for quite some time. BUT, if the scents are in the air and Aspen fights off his advances, it makes me wonder if he wouldn't try going to the next best, or closest thing...?? I don't know. But I am definitely concerned about it. *sigh*

Well ThankYou Danielle for all the help so far, and I will hope to hear some more ponderings from everybody soon.

ThankYou Charlesex. I will make sure that Sophie is okay. Even if on her own for awhile, she should be just fine. As a rejected joey, she's far more bonded to me than either of her parents anyway. She's only ten weeks old. And most joeys leave their parents, so I'm sure, with me, she won't be too lonely. I will definitely make sure I watch her very closely though.

My guess is...the neutering was effective since the bald spot on his head has disappeared. Since he is still scenting...my guess is his hormones are still dropping.

His PomPom should feel flat like there is nothing whatsoever inside of it. So, might want to check it. Also, might want to call your vet...and ask him how much longer till he will be sterile and with no desire to possibly want to mate.

I had a male who when a baby was neutered by the tie off method. It was a proceedure that was botched. When I purchased him...I thought he was a female. At a year oop. suddenly "she" developed a bald spot on the top of her head and a chest gland. I thought I was seeing things....as I had "her" paired with another male. Well, seems "she" was a he. His testicles had slipped up inside of his abdom cavity during the neutering procedure....so he was never able to produce offspring....but was quite able to breed a female when repaired to one.

I know how ya feel Charlesex. The debate, in fact doesn't bother me at all. It was a fascinating read there for awhile. But now other posts are going unnoticed, so I've turned my attention to other things.

ThankYou so much for replying Judie. I very much value your input on this one. Interestingly enough, Versai tried mounting Sophie last night, despite our theories that he wouldn't be interested in her. I watched them up and eating and playing for hours just to be sure something like this didn't happen, but sure enough, it did. Anyway, I was forced to seperate him again. I nearly decided to seperate Sophie from the pair, but she's still learning from her Mum, so I didn't want to do that yet.

Judie, your she glider that turned back into a he glider worried me. lol. Versai was neutered much the same way I think. The vet said, when I asked her what procedure was used, she said she only knew of one way, and he came out with no Pom at all. I just assumed with no Pom there at all, whether the right way or the less approved way, it was done, and his drive and baby making skills were gone. But now I'm not so sure. *sigh*

Versai's bald spot HAS indeed gone away. I just hope i doesn't return. I'm still left unsure what to do about the pairing. Of course I'm sure Mom and Dad need to stay together like always. But if Sophie is going to be abused I don't want her in there. Now I have to figure out what's best. To leave her with her parents, or find a way to acquire another cage as soon as I can afford one to seperate her from them. Any other suggestions? And thankyou so much for all your help so far, My Friend.

ThankYou Cyndiekb, I can most certainly understand being fertile up to five or six weeks after getting neutered, but Versai is going on his 10th week now. That's almost double that time frame. And he's defnitely still got his drive. I just hope Aspen and I don't have to suffer through one more rejected joey, or worse, two rejected joeys. It's just too hard on us both. And me so, even more than her. Well anyway, thankyou again for replying.

lol. You are so silly...

You know what though, If I wasn't so crazy in love and smitten with her myself, I would think that's a fabulous idea. I am so very fortunate that Sophie had made herself so many friends the past couple months, and I would be thrilled to see her placed in any one of their homes... Yours, or Tracie's or Karin's, or JenJen's, or Megi's, or Chey's or Sheila's or or or...ANY of them. Except for just one thing... She's Mine. Mhwahaha Alllll MINE!

ThankYou Peggy, HeeHe. Seriously, I am so glad you posted that. You made me giggle AND made me realize just how fortunate I am. Love Ames!

Estrus lasts 2-3 days depending on the female. So she could still be in estrus. He is trying to mate with the daughter too? I wasn't aware he had tried. Ijust thought we were worried about it at this point. I would separate him if that is what he his doing.

has the male's bald spot diminished yet?it is directly linked to the males' hormones so it should correspond with the nueter and decreasing hormones. threee months is awhile...
I know with other types of animals even if one is neutered, when the other goes into heat it can still trigger the reaction/desire to mate....If your vet has the expreience you could always have the girls spayed too but that would be soo costly,if there is another way around it that may be better....sophie may need to be kept away from him til she is old enough to handle his advances.
As long as the neuter was done right (if your vet did the procedure b4 surely it was) he should not be able to impregnate them tho....

Hiya Danielle. Well, I'm not 100% sure about whether or not Versai actually tried mating with Sophie, but he was scenting her like crazy, smelling her in all the right places, and trying to get around behind her. It was, what I thought to be, signs that he was at least "about" to try, so I had seperated him from the Girls for two nights. I didn't last night, becuase I hadn't gotten too many replies/advice tips, so I thought maybe I was over reaccting. So I let the three of them stay together last night.

Cyncatt, yes the bald spot HAS diminished. But his chest scent gland has interestingly gotten more yellow, and he's still able to produce ebough scent to get Aspen and Sophie wet with it, and not too mention, smelling awful. And I'm not sure if the neuter was done correctly, I wish I knew enough to know, but how could I? lol. I DO know that she's done the procedure about 25 times before. Not a lot, I know, but I would think more than enough to know what she's doing...

Hopefully Aspen is out of estres now, and this will stop. But if she goes in again and he acts the same...I don't know what I'll have to do. I guess start trying to figure out how to afford to get Sophie a new cage and a new room mate. goodness... lol.

Well thankyou both for replying again. It really does help to have more people to help me think this through and why it's going the way it's going. Thanks Again. LuvAmes.

Amy, I have heard that neutering doesn't always take away their drive, they just can't produce babies. If he keeps this behavior up, you might need to at least separate out Sophie when mom is in estrus. And later when Sophie is in estrus. I had a female joey in with mom and dad and dad was exhibiting behavior similiar to mating and later found out that dad will scent the females by climbing on top of them, it appears he is trying to mate, but he's not. As we all know too well, hormones can make you do crazy stuff. If he still has his chest scent gland, I'd ask the vet if that's normal or if maybe something is going on? Maybe a little salt peter might help?

ThankYou so much for responding Chey. I sure hope you're right and that it just LOOKS like he wants to mate with Sophie. That's just too much to even think about.

I do want to post a little bit of a developement though... I was looking at Versai a little closer tonight, and the bald spot that was completely GONE well over a month ago, looks like it has come back a little bit. It's faint, but it's definitely there more than it was weeks after his neutering. I want to close my eyes and hide and pretend this hasn't happened. lol. But that would probably be the worst thing I could do. Does anybody have any suggestions? I am thinking I will call my vet tomorrow afternoon and see what she has to say about the possibility of something going wrong, but I doubt anyone would own up to that anyway, right? *sigh* And the plot thickens...

Seems to me if the bald spot is returning than whether they want to own up to it or not they will have no choice in the situation!! Also, if thats the case, I would surely keep lil Sophie out of there so there is no chance of her becoming hurt with all dads frustrating hormones flying around Good Luck with all this and do call the vet and let us know what they say.

How interesting. I wonder if something came untied if they just tied. I would imagine that could happen as it has happened with woman time and time again. Let us know what happens and i agree with keeping sophie out of there.

And I have been sperating one from the group over night the past four nights, but it looks like I'm going to have to try to figure out how to get together the funds for a new cage and cage supplies for little miss Sophie pretty quick. I sure wasn't expecting that, so it won't be easy. But I always figure it out SOMEhow. lol. I want to thank you for all your help with this over the past few days. LuvAmes!
