Hi,
I just brought home my new girl Almond from Priscilla. Her mother is Kit a white mosaic from the Snow White line. My question is and Priscilla really doesn't know for sure is: she is so light like a platinum and Priscilla said it even looks like she has white hairs throughout the tail and the stripe kinda fades but looks more like white/light hairs grew into it. She is thinking that I might get lucky and she throughs mosaics/white variations. She sin't sure though. So my question really is that in white colors platinum is sometime displayed as well as the WF with it. Could it be that she doesn't diplay the white but the platinum, meaning that just because she isn't white but has a few hairs could that be a way of the gene expressing itself as well as through the very light coloration. Here is a pic so you can see her. I am very interrested and have wondered this, but know that I have a glider like this i am very curious! Hopefully you understand what i am asking!LOL! Either way she will have beautiful babies!

Well... have you seen my newest joeys? Fu and Destiny joeys

I can't tell you by looking at your pictures exactly what she is or is not. But I can say I when I bought Fu from Priscilla, she told me she "thought" Fu was a white variation, but couldn't prove it until he breed because he wasn't clearly marked, to me, he looks just like a WFB. And she was so right, and he did prove himself. So, I'd say that if she thinks she could be, then she could be, there is only one way to find out..... wait for joeys. Good luck.

Ya, she was telling me about that on Sunday. My plan is to right now put her with My WFB Skittles. I will try to prove her out 2 times. If that doesn't work then I will put her with my hopefully soon to be ringtail male. If she proves out her babies should be gorgeous. Miss Kitty)P's glider) just a plane ol ringtail and another glider from snow Whites line produced Almonds parents which are beautiful mosaics. You would never guess they came from miss kitty. I right know have 2 girls from the snow white line in hopes of that happening. I am trying to get my glider business going to help me with vet school. So far it isn't going well as (I think) people are leary because I am not a well known breeder. RIght now I am just hoping to get some beautiful loving gliders!

Thanks for all the compliments guys. Yes my avitar is Skittles who is the dad to 2 little WFB girls I have for sale.
If you are interrested in a glider like Almond I can put you on a list for when she has babies if you would like. Just let me know.

Seems sad that you would remove her and change her mate because she doesn't "prove out" the way you want her to. Gliders become very bonded to their mates. How sad that is is more about what they might produce then the gliders themselves.

Did something happen to Skittles mate? Or are you pulling him away from his mate too?

Right now that is what i would like to do. I am mainly doing it to help with the glider lines since she is from a non-producing line I would like to breed out the generations. To start off with, I don't even now if there is a ringtail in the future to pair her with. I may also just wait to pair her with a ringtail. I haven't decided.

To add to the last question I am having to pull him away to prevent inbreeding with his daughter that was kept with her mother. I will not seperate them until the babies have found new loving homes.

It's hard to tell from the pics (she is gorgeous though!), but I agree that if Priscilla says there's a chance, then there's a chance. She's a beauty!

I am hoping Priscilla is right.

Just want to take a quick pole:
How many people disagree with moving gliders to different families? How many think it is ok?

I personally don't mind it. If I noticed depression or any sign of anything like that I wouldn't risk it. I put my gliders first! I would like Almond to be able to express her color to the fullest potential!

I personally don't think its a good idea. I see the way my gliders look at each other and how bonded they are and they've only been together for a week or two. I don't think i could seperate them even if i wanted to.

I know what you mean my 2 other pairs no matter how bad i wanted to seperate i couldn't because of that exact reason. With Skittles I don't feel or see the same connection.

There is no need to switch partners.

For one... moving gliders to new partners creates undue stress which often leads to a compromised immune system resulting to an open gateway for a lurking oppertuniest illness.

And secondly, when breeding for the mosaic... only one parent need to be a carrier of the mosaic variation since it does not appear to be simple recessive like the albino or leucistic.

I have to admit that when I first started breeding, long before I found GC, I had a trio with a male & 2 females (mother/daughter). The females would never take care of their joeys once they came oop, and were obviously not going to be good for breeding (which is why I ended up with so much experience in hand-raising joeys). I separated them from the male and got him a new companion. I was fortunate and everything went well, but I now shudder to think of all the damage that I could have caused in my ignorance shakehead Given the same circumstances and the knowledge I now have, I would not repeat what I did...

Thank you all for your comments. I am taking it all as constructive criticism. I understand where you are coming from completely. I hvae now decided not to seperate him. WEll I will have to only once so he doesn't breed with his daughter but NO more after that. From there I will figure where to place my new girls!

Tyler, I hope you do understand that we are not attacking you on this. Many of us have had gliders for years and some things we have learned the hard way (like Suz said), from experience.

I have one pair here that is so bonded to each other that when he was injured and had to be seperated from her, they both lost a great deal of weight and were very depressed. Neither would play, wouldn't run on their wheels, just sat and cried at night for each other. The joy in their reunion, the way they reacted when I was finally able to put them back together taught me to not seperate bonded pairs if it can be avoided.

The exception to this is if one is totally dominating the other and preventing him/her from eating or if they are fighting and inflicting wounds on each other (which tells me they are not all that bonded).

When humans get married and it turns bad, they can choose to divorce. But what if they are the loves of each other's lives and someone comes along to force them apart? The heart ache would be just unimaginable to me.

Perhaps sometimes certain gliders need a divorce but for the most part, once they bond, it is a life long bond and they shouldn't be seperated.

Like Judie said, if she has the mosiac genes, she doesn't need to be paired up with another mosaic (or ringtail) to produce the unique color variations you are hoping for.

Alicia (queenduck) has a white variation boy in with a black beauty/leu het and the joey is going to be just breath taking. She has a post on here about the little joeys and pictures on her website.

Maybe you can let Skittles stay with his mate and find her a little mate of her own.

I completely understand and I know you are not attacking. I am so glad that when I have questions ya'll are able to help me and guide me down the right path. I do have one male that is very dominant the first girl he was with he completely scared and dominated her to the point she couldn't come out to eat or drink. Then I found him another mate and I have never seen him so sweet, so I do understand what you mean. I am hoping that ya'll will be here to guide me through the process of being a respectable breeder. I am only 17 and learning as much as I can. I plan on going to vet school and am using my money from gliders for that purpose(first of all for the gliders necessity then into my college fund). I plan on going to school and specializing in exotics(zoo vet) and maybe be able to figure out the craziness behind glider genetics. Basicall all in all I am asking for everyones help on guiding me down the right pathway.
Thank you very much for bringing up all the great comments.

Tyler, won't don't you remove the girls from Skittles and his mate instead of removing Skittles? That would be the best thing to do if the girls are weaned. The father will not try to mate his daughters until they are sexually mature and go into heat.

Lynsie, I kept his girl from a last litter with his mom. At Priscillas when you opena pouch you see a whole family of mothers and daughters. Like4 of them. I think that is so amazing and that is what I was trying to do. So it isn't the WF girls I m worried about.

You asked the question as to what I thought of Almonds coat color. Well... it is a little difficult to really say what color she is due to the photos being taken with two different kinds of cameras.

From the pics that Priscilla took she appears to have the champagne coloration with silver sheen that is typical of the Mosaic. We refer to this sheen as being Powdered.

From your pics... Almond looks more like a platinum with silver tipping (Powdered) which is also seen in Priscilla's mosaic line.

So, as beautiful as she is... if there is a slight possibility of her having the mosaic gene... my suggestion is to pair her to a lesser leucistic het. A Possible 50%/66% male. By doing so... she may just suprise you.

And should she not express the mosaic gene to her future offspring... well, you will have some awesome looking White Face Blonde babies. mlove

Good Luck with breeding.

Thanks for your advice.
I never thought of pairing her with a leu het. I guess i will now consider a leu het. I hvae seen her since the day she came oop. Every weekend I go to P's to work it seems that she powdered up more. I am considering what you said Judie, and I will look for a WF leu het. Would a 100% het be ok or is there a reason for a lesser het?
