Hi there... I have been a proud owner of a sweet little glider girl (Dahlila) and recently added a friend (Sampson) to the mix. When I bought Dahlila, I purchased a years worth of food from the breeder. He calls it "glider Grub" It is about 1 inch in length and about the size around of a pencil. It smells very fruity.

He talked at length about how some did the BML diet, but this particular food was made by Purina and specifically for the Sugar Glider breed. He stated that it has all of the protien needed for her diet, and to leave it in all day, and add the fruits and veggies at night... She has done well, and has grown, however after getting Sampson and speeking with the gal that I got him from, I this is suitable.

In the lit that I was given, and the breeder of Dahlila, it all states that mealworms, and meat can be given as treats but not neccisary when you use this food that I bought from the breader...Sampson had been eating diet somewhat similar to BML, with Meal worms, fruit and veggies and he is HUGE... they are really within 2 weeks in age and he is giant compared to her... I would assume like with anything that growing slower is better for you then fast...maybe it is genetics, but I am concernd about the diet I have chosen... Like I said, Dahlila loves it...and has been healthy to to date... I also sprinkle some vitamin/calcium mix that I bought with Dahlila too (just wanted to make sure you all knew that I wasn't leaving out the supplement)

Anyway, I would love to hear from others that have heard of "glider grub" and their thoughts on it...

Is this what you are talking about:

http://www.cageworks.com/animal_gallery/sugar_g/glider_grub.html

I don't think it is made by Purina, tho'. I would be a bit concerned about the hard pellets as gliders are sap suckers and like to chew their food and spit it out. Also, pellets can cause scratches on the gums that lead to abcesses and infections.

Yes... that is actually the breeder that I bought Dahlila from...along with the food...

She does do some chewing and spitting...but poops enough that I know she is getting plenty.... This breeder said he had been using it for years...

I am struggling at what to do, cause she really seems to like it!

You may want to check out our diet links for a more appropriate diet. You don't have to do BML if you don't want. I have no idea of the ingredients in the pellets (maybe you could email the breeder and ask) - but they might be okay for a staple food if she is doing well on it. She definately will need additional fruits/veggies and a protein source (mealies are good for that).

I also use the glider grub and I keep that in the cage at all times. The only thing I don't like is that because it sits in a bowl, I have one glider that I swear has herself potty trained, if you know what I mean...I check it every day to make sure it's clean. I also give lots of fruits and veggies every night and use the vitamin supplement they provided every other night. I think I must have gotten mine from the same breeder. They are doing really well on it and are super healthy. Mine chew and spit as much as they eat for sure. I don't even know how they get it that far outside the cage LOL!!! I've had them for 5 months now and they are as active and playful as ever.

Most of the time. My smaller girl is a bully with certain foods-it's actually quite humorous, and when she hogs it, I sprinkle it on the Glider Grub to make sure the other one gets it too.

I also got my gliders from the same breeder, but no longer feed the glider grub as a staple food. As Mel2mdl said, gliders are sap suckers and get moisture from their food, as well as the point she made about it scratching their mouth and causing abcesses and infections. I believe CCW was correct that the food is made by Purina Mills - it's the Mazuri dry food that he just repackages and sells as Glider Grub.

After all the research I've done, and by the advise of my vet, I'm using one of the proven diets from here. You have to realize that that breeder is just a mill breeder and is in it to make money. If he sells you this food and tells you it's good for your gliders and that's what you should feed them, then that makes him more money when you reorder the food (and by the way he doesn't tell you the name of it because then you wouldn't have to buy it from him - I specifically asked for the name of it and he just told me that it was made by Purina and it was for marmosets and sugar gliders, and that you can only buy it in bulk so I'd never use it all before it went bad.)

I'd urge you both to consider using one of the proven diets here.

If you read the information on that link, it says that "Glider Grub is designed to be an essential part of your glider's total feeding system." The key word here is PART!

If you go on to read, it explains that the glider grub contains the proteins your gliders need, but you still need to supply fruits and veggies.

It says this: "Glider Grub, plenty of fruits, plenty of vegetables and very little meat or live food."

The web site doesn't say if the Grub contains the calcium and vitimins that gliders need.

I would suggest you change her over to one of the recommended suggie diets on the links page, but even if you decide to keep her on it, make sure you give her plenty of liquids! They are sap-suckers!

I know mine get lots of fruits and veggies and they eat f&v every night. They also have a clean bowl of water at all times and a watering bottle. They also have vita-glider that gets sprinkled on the fruits and veggies every other night. If they are out of the cage during the day, I keep a piece of fresh apple with them also.

I got my gliders from CCW back in Aug. and was told the same thing. Since then I have switched to BML. This breeder also says not to feed any kind of meat as it will make them smell bad ???They also tell you to feed the fruits and veggies along with vita glider. I spent a fortune on this stuff and ending up feeding it to the cat, which wouldnt hardly eat it.

If she said you can't give gliders meat, I would not feed the diet she recommends. No experienced glider breeder would say something like that!

Looks like this fellow made the rounds! I also got Keiko from this company, along with a hefty supply of this glider grub. When I found this site (about a month later), I switched her over to BML. I do have to admit, it was difficult wasting all that I bought (I tend to stockpile stuff).

Mel2mdl and TracieB are correct. It's not the best food to offer, and not the best diet plan. mill breeders, just by their business, are in it to make money. Your gliders' long-term health is not their primary concern.

I also recommend looking through the diet page. Captive gliders have specialized dietary needs and need the proper blend of nutrients (with protein, fruits, veggies, vitamins, and calcium). For some of the diets, you should be able to find all of the ingredients in a grocery store and pet store. Find one that will suit your lifestyle and your gliders' preferences. You'll want to follow whatever diet you choose, as outlined. Don't mix and match the various plans or ingredients or you'll throw off the overall calcium to phosphorus (Ca:P) ratios, as well as introduce other unhealthy imbalances.

I also got my first glider from this same "breeder" along with a years supply of "Glider Grub". Of course, that is not what I now feed!! I, too, hated to throw all the "grub" away. So I froze it. I figured if the power went out (and it did during the recent ice storms in the midwest) and my nectar mix thawed out - at least I would have "something" to feed my girls until electric was turned back on.

I tell you - that guy and his employees have a line of bull a mile long, don't they? They certainly suckered me out of quite a bit of my hard earned money!!!

And - yes - this person goes EVERYWHERE. I'm in a little town of Sullivan, MO and guess what??? He was here, too!!!

I do the same, but am also starting to add in the BML minus the vitamins, I am sprinkling those on the veggies and fruit.... I have left the Glider Grub in during the day.... but as soon as they start eating the BML better I will probably take it out.

jillalala, BML minus the vitamins isn't BML. frown If you're sprinkling the Vita-Glider on the fruits and veggies, that's not the same as mixing in the prescribed Rep-Cal vitamins and calcium into the BML diet. I recommend making a batch of the BML, as written, and then removing the Glider Grub as soon as you can. I would also cut down on the amount of Glider Grub you offer. If they like it and are eating it, they'll naturally fill up on it. Hopefully they'll start eating the BML right away. You might try offering some as a licky treat to get them interested. I also buried mealies in the BML to entice Keiko to eat the BML. It worked. She, and my two boys, leave clean plates every night. smile

Doesn't the fact that you can keep a "two years supply" worry you? I can't imagine what is in a FOOD that can make it last that long and still be good... EW.

jillalala - You sent me a PM and I replied the same day, but it shows that it's still unread. You should see a flashing envelope next to the My Stuff button up top. Just click on that and it will take you to the message.
