My little girl glider got out last night...she's a sneaky one. I am a wildlife rehabilitator, and she went up to a cage where one of the baby birds was and managed to pull her to the bars and distroyed one of her wings. Sadly, I think I have to have the bird put down. I know its not Zelda's fault, its her nature, but I wanted to warn anyone with birds and gliders. Beware.

I have read that gliders will eat small birds in nature so that doesn't surprise me....but still it is very sad....

I am very sorry to hear about your bird. I have small birds here, but Andre never seems to have any interest in them. I keep them covered during his play, so he never really sees them. Again, I'm sorry to hear about your bird.

Thanks for your kind comments. Fortunately, I was able to save the bird. And, though she will never be releasable, she has even regained some use of the wing and now has begun to fly again. I have since built a much bigger and more secure cage for my sweet, yet mischievous sugar gliders.

Congratulations on saving the bird. That must have taken a lot of TLC.
Marvin
It's not just small birds. My friend's mama glider "shredded" two of her cockatiels. I have also heard of a pygmy hamster that went missing near a glider's cage.

They may seem tame, but even domestic cats can't be trusted to ignore nature.

I have clips on my doors on my cage so mine cant get out. I wouldnt be able to live with my self if one got killed by my cats. The clips are like small one you can clip your car keys to your belt loop. My friend told me about them. My baby got out the first night in her temperary cage. The clips are a little noisey takeing on and off,but it is worth it.
------------------
Thanks Kellie,
Snackers and SugarBritches
[This message has been edited by Kellie (edited 10-06-2001).]
