Depends entirely on the particular well. Only way to know is to have the well water tested. We live in a rural area and only use well water. The amount of iron or any other mineral or contaminent in well water depends on where the well is located. Under any circumstances a good filter should be used.

Charlie is right on. "I live in the country" doesn't tell enough. Have it tested. In many locales the health department or water department can do or facilitate this.

I've seen wells test positive for Giardia, nitrites, agri-chemicals, coliform bacteria, PCB's and much more. On the other hand, it can be quite healthy and pure enough to drink. It depends on location, geography and how underground water drainage works at your place. There is always something in water, and most sediment and minerals are OK.

Call your local public health department or water department and inquire how to proceed for testing. One suggestion: I would inquire whether they would test to see if the humans can safely drink the water. If humans can, assume safety for gliders. You may lose them if you ask if the gliders can drink the water.
