My two joeys that were so such a surprise to arrive were once again, rejected by Scrabble (Mom). After following the instructions on how to take care of a joey step by step from this page, both Joeys passed away slowly and painfully.
My wife and I followed the instructions step by step and made sure that nothing was overlooked. We lost alot of sleep and we are both tired and heart broken.(If we had to do it again, we would regardless of the outcome)This is the third time that Scrabble rejects her Joeys. That's why I separated her from the male in April, so she would not get pregnant again, and to my surprise, Gliders (as many marsupials) have a "floating Uterus" that allows them to store embrios until the time they see fit. Well, This one was the hardest lost of all. All I could do is give it my best shot and I saw two precious lives fade away no matter how much effort I invested.
After my brief cry (and believe me, this is brief, I could cry, yell and shout alot more regarding this last experience) I wanted to ask, How many of you have had rejected Joeys make it to adulthood and independance?
If any of you can share their experience and triumphs, please DO SO!
Any advice would be taken as GOSPEL and nothing would be ruled out.
I am not planning on placing Scrabble with a male...ever, but the possibility of another of my gliders rejecting a Joey would send me to the padded room and I want to be BEYOND ready.
Thank you all for your time. I really need to calm down and enjoy my gliders more this week to forget this horrible experience.

Die worn out instead of rust out!

Oh Gil I'm so sorry. I know I have only had to supplement my babies so I can't even imagine what you had to go through. The one I did feed out was 5 weeks old already. I have tried to supplement a younger joey but found I am grateful my mommy got mad and took it back. Hugs for the effort.

I heart & miss you HALEY

I have raisied a few babies from day one and I will tell you it is a hard job. Supplementing if possible is always best for the little ones and is less work as one can adjust thier schedule for feedings so not to go without sleep. Being sleep deprived is a killer.

I just weaned a set of twins that I handfed and I will tell you they were the hardest to raise. This was the first time for me with twins.

I am sorry you lost the little ones. You did your best to help them during their brief time here. Mother Nature in the end... always seems to know what is best.

Oh Gil! I am so so very sorry for the heartache.
It is so very very hard when we lose wee ones.
I still get really emotional and cry over my precious little 4th of July boy that didnt make it (that was almost 2 years ago - he was so special to me, where he came from and where his Father came from...). No matter how hard I tried and the days of sleep lost... it just didnt work. So VERY heartbreaking.
I could not stand the thought of ever having my heart broke like that again... Now both my boys are neutered.
Even still, the experience of it all was beautiful. I will never ever forget it. So precious these tiny beings are... its amazing how something so itty bitty can absolutely steal our hearts and become so important to us.

Im so sorry Gil.
Good thoughts and a prayer that you be comforted.

Oh Gil I am so sorry. You did try and thats what counts. They know you love them and wanted to help but like Judie said, sometimes mother nature knows whats best. I have only had 2 rejected joeys and neither of them I saved, although I did try. So for me I couldn't give you a good success story, but I do know of many who have saved their rejected joeys and they end up living a good life. Hopefully you wont have to go through this again, it is heartbreaking and frustrating all at the same time.

I am so encourages by yor message Amy.
Reading your step-by-step experience raising a Joey was very emotional. I saw the pictures and I have to say, this 37 year old "Dad" was getting watery eyes.
How could I ever show you my gratitude for you encouragement?
I wish you could also tell me about the feeding.
Did you follow the formula of puppy milk and BML or the Wombaroo powder milk? Did you also give her water or pedialite after each feeding.
How did you keep her warm at night?
Heating pad? Heating rock?
How did you keep the milk from going bad. Room temp milk? Did you freeze the milk or tossed the puppy milk away after two days.
I want to know how in every detail.
I feel guilt and I keep thinking that I missed something.
Did I feed her too little or too much? Was my milk too warm?
Did my breath stink?
All life is precious...even (dare I say it...) Roaches...YUK!
I hate roaches, but even them deserve life.
I hope I never EVER go thorugh this again, but if GOD has it in His agenda for me...bring it on! Gliders are spell casting creatures and I am just another Glider Victim.
Die worn out instead of rust out!

The formula... I refrigerate it after each feeding and warm it up for 12 seconds and stir. It has a tendancy to evaporate water so if it should become noticable then I add a little more water to it. Too thin? Then add a little BML to thicken it up. I discard the mix within 24 hours and made up a new batch in a clean dish.

It is important to monitor the stools. Especially with the Wombaroo replacer. Personally, I never could get it mixed right and the baby would get yellow and runny stool. Because of this very reason...I use 1/2 cube of BML and premix 1 teaspoon of puppy replacer. Stool then is simi soft but not runny and is brown. If dark and dry then the mix needs more water and the little one is becoming constipated.

What helps with handfeeding is also to monitor for dehydration. Sometimes.... by time we notice there is a real problem...little one is dehydrated. Sub-q'ing a little one can be a life saver for him. This needs to be done by a vet and if possible show you how to do it at home. Sub-q'ing usually needs to be done several times a day for short period. Once the little one is eating well on his own...and no longer dehydrated sub-q'ing can be eleminated.

How to tell if a little one is dehydrated? Well....if severly dehydrated....when the baby is flipped over...his skin on his underside will be very wrinkled. Moderatly dehydrated? The skin on his back will be wrinkled and tent....but not the underside.

A tiny baby who weighs 10 grams will usually be able to eat between .30 to .40 every 2 hours. One that is only eating .20 of formula usually has to be sub-q'ed as well or he will dehydrate out as he is not taking in enough fluids.

Go slow when feeding as little one will often fall asleep and has to gently be coaxed to wake up to continue his dinner.

Gill...if you have any more questions...feel free to ask.
