So wait. What is best - filtered water, not distilled, right? What's up with that?

Disstilled water is bad for gliders.
Because of baterica and stuff it can make a glider sick
Right?
I think filtered water is the best or bottled water

No, distilled water is bad because it is devoid of ALL nutrients and minerals and so when a glider drinks it, the water acts as a magnet and sucks the nutrients and minerals from the glider. It is sold typically in gallon jugs at Wal-Mart, etc. It will say Distilled on it.

Tap water is bad because of bacteria and other things that are in it in small traces. This includes Giardia. It is ok to use tap water if it is filtered though (by adding a filter to your faucet, whole house filter, or in fridge filter)

Bottled water is ok, but I don't use it because I hate the taste personally. Also just because the bottle says it came from a spring in Arkansas, etc doesn't mean it really did...lol

Personally I use filtered because I know without a shadow of a doubt it is safe for both me and my gliders.

Distilled water is made from evaporating the water and letting in condense in sterile condition. It contains H2O and *NOTHING* else. Most water we drink - bottled, tap or filtered - contains minerals which are picked up from the ground, air, etc. (Or in the case of tap, added.) Filtered water is the best for the suggies 'cause they cannot stand the same quantities of bacteria that humans can (and that is legal). When animals and people drink distilled water, the minerals are pulled from the body to compensate for the loss in the water.

Personally, I use tap. But - I am in a large city that has fairly high water standards. Plus, the floride has to be good for their teeth, right? But I am in the minority here. Filtered or bottled water - same thing, really - is best.

I don't think disstilled water would have bacteria in it... people use it in oxygen machines and medical equipment... but probably spring bottled water is better for them, that is what I use for my gliders...

My sink filter leaves the flouride in (It's a Culligan screw-on) but removes 99.9% of bacteria and other microogranisms and chemicals including chlorine.

I'll have to look at one of those. The main reason we don't have a filter is the flouride. I mean, man, do I need it! (Can't stand dentists!)

LOL...They sell them at Target. I could be wrong about the flouride, but I'm pretty sure it leaves it.

Cool - thanks, I will look into it. I don't worry to much about my water, but don't drink much either!

I'm sorry, but it makes me crazy when people hear something not based in fact and run with it. I cannot find one VALID article (ie, not by a bottling or water company) that supports the theory that distilled water leaches minerals from your body - actually there are more articles that say the opposite. Someone please post a valid article supporting this conclusion.

Yeah - but I won't use distilled cause it tastes really bad and, if it taste bad to me, I don't think my suggies would like it either.

To be honest, the mineral thing makes sense, but, you're right, I've never seen evidence of it. Sorry - my bad. Anybody else seen articles for or against this?

My guys get culligan filtered water from the grocery store... I refuse to drink our water, and I won't let my babies do it either... We were on a boil order for 3 years, and the water still doesn't taste or look right 5 years later!

As far as the Distilled water goes, it is as pure as pure gets. The reason they use it for medical supplies as well as clothes irons, is there is nothing in it to leave the residue that you sometimes get from water standing for too long... like at the top of a fish tank.... I don't know about it pulling minerals from your body, but i do know my doc doesn't recommend that I drink it, so why would i give it to my suggies?

I have always been told by doctors and vets never to drink it or let my animals drink it. I've never seen an article supporting it, but when my doctor and vet BOTH say don't do it, I don't do it.

I wonder about this water topic as well.

Gossamer, here is what I found from Wikipedia:
Quote:
Pros and cons
The drinking of distilled water has been both advocated and discouraged for health reasons. The lack of naturally-occurring minerals in distilled water has raised some concerns.

The Journal of General Internal Medicine[1] published a study on the mineral contents of different waters available in the US. The study concluded, "drinking water sources available to North Americans may contain high levels of Calcium, Magnesium, and Sodium and may provide clinically important portions of the recommended dietary intake of these minerals. Physicians should encourage patients to check the mineral content of their drinking water, whether tap or bottled, and choose water most appropriate for their needs." Since distilled water doesn't contain minerals, supplemental mineral intake through diet is needed to maintain proper health.

It is often observed that consumption of "hard" water, or water that has some minerals, may have beneficial cardiovascular effects. As noted in the American Journal of Epidemiology, consumption of hard drinking water is negatively correlated with atherosclerotic heart disease.[2] Since distilled water is devoid of minerals, it will not have these potential benefits.

It has been suggested that -- because distilled water lacks fluoride ions that are added by many governments (e.g. municipalities in the United States) at water treatment plants using fluoridation for its supposed effect on the inhibition of cavity formation -- the drinking of distilled water may conceivably increase the risk of tooth decay due to a lack of this element.[3]

A purported effect of drinking water in its pure form is a 'more powerful solvent' that helps cleanse toxins from the body[citation needed].

The cost of distilling water (about 0.04 to 0.10 Euro or USD per litre in 2005) prohibits its use by most households worldwide.[citation needed]

Possibly the concern that distilled water takes minerals from the body was once based on fact that kinda got changed when passed along; like a game of telephone.
Not everything found in water is bad. Like stated above, there's flouride in the water from plants in the US. Also, here in FL we have hard water that has tons of minerals in it from rainwater being filtered naturally through the limestone into the aquifers. Our bodies need minerals. So, someone who drinks distilled water has less mineral intake than someone who drinks tap/filtered tap water. If you don't have a balanced diet and compensate for the flouride in the water, then I could see how drinking distilled water is bad. But I dont' really see how drinking water is bad either. Another theory is that maybe since distilled water doesn't have salt in it, if there's little/no salt in the diet, then water absorption into the body could be minimal leading to dehydration? Salt helps in hydration, which is why it is in Gatorade and Pedialyte.
