hello, i was wondering about the zookepers, i am using BML right now, but i would like to see how the Zookeepers work

is the zookeepers like the bml, i mean do you feed it the same, just instead of the BML, put the zookeepers in, with fruits and veggies, and sprinkle them with the rep-cal and rep-herpivitive(or whetever you spell it) xD???...am i right?

If your gliders are eating the BML well, then I wouldn't switch--if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

But, to get on with your questions:
By zookeeper's, I'm assuming you mean the suncoast diet? I'm basing my answers on this assumption.

Similarities--both incorporate daily fruits and veggies. I'd say the similarities end there.

Differences:

Staple-
The staple in this diet is zookeeper's secret aka insectivore fare, as opposed to the BML mix in the BML diet.

Vitamins-
BML uses rep-cal phosphorus free with vitamin D3 AND herptivite which are mixed in prior to feeding. Suncoast uses rep-cal phosphorus free with NO vitamin D3 AND vionate (multivitamin) to be sprinkled (1/8 tsp glider) on top of food.

Specific fruits and veggies-
BML is a bit more restrictive and has a specific list of what to feed. It is important to incorporate several of these items, though, as it compensates for the high phosphorus levels in some of the components (ie. corn). Suncoast has no restrictions, but you should research what fruits and veggies you feed --ie. you don't want anything high in oxylates, iron, etc.

Bugs-
Suncoast recommends gutloaded bugs. The bugs in BML are optional, but probably shouldn't be gutloaded beforehand if offerred.

Protein-
Suncoast includes added protein-like yogurt, egg, chicken, bugs. With BML, the protein is already included in the staple.

OK, that's all I can think of off hand...

You can't interchange the two because they use different vitamin supplements and the nutritional value is different in the BML and Zookeepers. I wouldn't recommend changing diets unless there is a problem with the suggies eating it. If you decide to switch to the Zookeeper's, you have to change their entire diet to follow a diet specifically designed to include Zookeepers. I feed my girls the Suncoast diet, which uses the Zookeepers; but again, I don't recommend changing diets unless you see a problem with their current diet. Is there a reason you ask about switching it out?

I bought a bag of Zookeepers and my gliders would not touch the stuff. Now I have a bag collecting dust. Has anyone else had this problem?

Gliders have preferences and tastes, just like us. That's why there are a variety of recommended diets, and not just one (or one "best") diet. ZooKeeper's is great for traveling (unlike BML), but if your gliders won't eat it, it's as bad as not being on a recommended diet at all. wink

Gina, great comparison of the two diet plans!

Well, if you're getting your suggie from Lisa at Suncoast, she will have a care pamphlet to go home with you which outlines the Suncoast diet. She is also wonderful about answering questions, even if you don't get your suggies from her. Otherwise, the Suncoast diet is also in the diets page. Please do not feed a combination of the BML and Suncoast diets. The best thing to do to ensure proper nutrition is to follow one diet as listed. Congratulations on the upcoming arrival!

im getting my mojave (2nd suggie) from a breeder in st. augustine, fl, so she has them on suncoast, so im planing on switching sahara to suncoast rather than switching him, so it wont be more stress than its probably already going to be

I used to live in JAX my whole life until two years ago! I loved going to the outlet mall and St George street and getting that $1 bread from the Spanish bakery! YUM! The Today show was in Africa today (Where in the World is Matt Lauer). It was pretty!

Depends on the glider. Mine are on the Suncoast diet because they wouldn't eat BML or Priscilla's diet. But, other gliders are the other way around and won't eat Zookeeper's.

Both of my gliders ate their zookeeper's with no problem when I had them on the suncoast diet.

All of my gliders are now on the SunCoast diet. They were not on a proven sugar glider diet before I got them. They eat all of it very well; the only times there are left-overs is when I give too much. wink I do hear of people who say their gliders don't like the ZooKeeper's Secret, but mine love it.
