I need to know what kind of bedding is safe for at the bottom of the cage. my mom is at the store and is going to pick some up but I forgot what is ok for them.

I buy the bedding made out of a paper like material. I usually get it at walmart, but they sell it in huge bags at petsmart and petco.

I use Carefresh at the bottom of my cage and I think it works awesome. You can probably find some at your local petstore. I usually change it out about once a week and haven't found anything else that controls the smell as well or for that long.

Is pine ok?

No, pine isn't safe. It contains dust and aromatic oils which are irritating to their respiratory systems.

Some safe alternatives: aspen, CareFresh, paper towels, black and white newspaper, fleece, old tshirts, fake grass mats, puppy pads, etc.

Just one more addition - I don't like anything shredded because then the poop falls into the shreds. I personally want to see the poop so I can notice any changes.

I am a fan of puppy pads! One they are super easy to clean up and two you can see everything on them and three they have baking soda in them to help keep the smell down!!

Please, stay away from pine and cedar!!

what are puppy pads?

i use paper towel and then carefresh on top because if i just use carefresh then it falls through the bars. HOWEVER, it is SO messy. she gets it on the floor even though there are guards on the cage and so i think when the bag of carefresh i have runs out i'm just going to use paper towels by themselves.

now that wont bother her feet if i just use paper towels? should it be like 2 layers on the cage floor?

You can find puppy pads in just about any store that sells pet foods/supplies. They are the pads you put down when housebreaking your puppy. They work wonders. I get mine at Walmart but I do recall, I believe it was Jayel, that got hers in bulk on Ebay...correct me if Im wrong someone.

Yes, you can use paper towels as long as your gliders cannot get to them. If they can reach them and they chew on them, it can cause intestinal blockage.

Another Mod told me that if they can get to the puppy pads that they can cause intestinalblockage too. I'd say, you pretty much don'y want them reachin' down there anyway, EEWWW! I've switched to old newspapers.

Most people have cages that have the drop trays below the wire cage floor. It is these incidents where the news paper, paper towels, puppy pads etc are used. For inside the cage (on top of the floor) I would stay with fleece, old t-shirts etc. I have a drop tray and I don't put anything inside on the floor.

[censored]. alright. i better hurry up and get the paper towels out fo there.

so would you recommend using stuff like old t-shirts and fleece blankets for them to walk on? i mean if the t-shirt is thin i can see her jumping form her pouch to the floor and her leg falling between the bars or something :/ is it comfortable and safe for them to just walk on the wire cage floor?

Is that Corn Cob bedding ok? I've been wondering.....

Corn cob bedding risks Aflatoxins if I'm not mistaken.

The safest bedding is no bedding at all, ie. a drop tray they cannot reach through the bottom cage bars.

so it doesnt hurt their feet to have to walk on just the cage bars?

because i heard that if the cage has mostly vertical bars it irritates their feet from climbing thatway all the time.. so if the bars on the cage floor are all mostly going one way wouldn't that irritate their feet as well?

My gliders all walk on the wire of the bottom of the cage and I haven't noticed their feet being irritated (I'll double check their feet and let you know). If they climb all over the cage I don't see how the bottom would hurt.

*Sorry for not posting more accurate info*

I use black and white newspaper, watch out for colors. Mine still try and reach through the cage to get the paper. Was watching mine last night, they run all over the wire, jump and everything. Their feet look okay.

well I was wondering, with a reptarium. What does everyone suggest to use for the bottom of the cage?

I don't have a rept... but from what I've read, most people put puppy pads under them and vacuum them out daily. HTH
