#28629 - 11/02/04 08:13 PM Glider Proofing

Hi everyone. I'm new to this site and kinda new to gliders. I have another site ( and I've been posting there for a while but someone from that site sent em here for another reason and I'm glad because I can't seem to log onto that site right now. Doobie and I have been bonding for about almost 2 months and we're not quite there yet. Everytime I take him out of his cage he tries to jump off of me so I take him into the tent. But yesterday as soon as I opened his cage he jumped right out. I have been wanting for him to be more on me than exploring the room but Doobie just seems to have a determined spirit so I have come to the conclusion that it would be better for him (and me) if I let him explore. But I need some steps to glider proof my room. IF anyone has any suggestions PLEASE HELP!

DoobiesMomma. Welcome to GC. I am glad you found us.
Amy2, welcome also.
My suggestion for glider proofing a room is simple. Crawl around and look at it from your gliders perspective. Look for anything that may hurt your glider. Also power cords, outlets, house plants (many are toxic) stuff like that. Remove anything that looks like it could harm your glider. Use baby proofing covers for your outlets. And if make sure you keep any toilet lids closed. Sadly to many little suggies have met their end in a toilet. They fall in and can't get back out. Don't forget to make sure they can not fit under the door. There should be no more than a half inch gap under the door. (same gap as their cage bars) Look for any holes that they might fit into and fix them so they are inaccessable. Use patience in your bonding, don't give up. Try out of cage time towards the end of there awake time. Or during the day for a short time period.

I hope this helps and again Welcome to GC.
Judge not until you have walked in their shoes and lived their lives. What you see online is only part of the story.

I could have missed the pain

Oh I hear you on the whole toilet thing. I lost my first glider, Loki, to a toilet drowning. It was the most awful thing I've ever gone through. To take that risk out, yes, keep the bathroom door shut. Also, close the toilet lid ALWAYS and think about installing a "toilet ladder". I have one in mine now... and I wish I would've a while back. If you need instructions for it, let me or BMXgirl know. I'm sure she'll be more than happy to help you... just as I am. If you need anything else, just let us all know! There are some AMAZING amounts of experience and knowledge here within these boards.

Other things you might want to watch out for are pencil holders, as they might jump onto them and well...ouch. Also, if it is 2 difficult to remove the cords after you unplug them every time you want to play, you can always coat the cords with vinegar, one lick of that and my lil one never got near the cord again. I've heard of people using tabasco sauce instead however, I don't think that is exactly safe as it can swell the tongue if taken a bit to much and block their wind pipes. Ooh and watch out for standing frames, you might want to lay those down...well thats all i can think of for now...

Thank you all for the information. Does anyone know anything I can use to cover beneath the bed? What do yall use because that seems to be his favorite spot to go to when he runs away from me.

My only suggestion is keep the cat away!! I lost my first & favorite suggie to a cat accident. The cat almost know. But he was only doing what comes natrually. So...keep the cat away!!!!!

O I NEVER let my kitties near Doobie or any of my others for that matter. And I have learned to keep my hand away from my snake after I held him. I forgot I had been holding him and went in to pick her up, on feeding day no less, and i almost got a nasty bite. Anywhoo than ks so much yall. We haven't been otuside the tent yet but I think we're going to try this weekend.
