#289445 - 05/17/07 01:25 AM Why are some sterile?

I was just wondering Ive seen some ads where it says some gliders are "possibly sterile"
Why are they sterile?? And how do you know if they are "possible sterile"

#289450 - 05/17/07 01:30 AM Re: Why are some sterile? [Re: ]

Well, I'm not completely sure (and I have a poss. sterile boy) - but I believe that back in the day, there was some inbreeding that happened that caused the sterility. From what I understand, the sterile lines that have been bred out 4-5 generations are now starting to produce again, but most of the producing offspring are females. Still, SOME males will reproduce, but they can't be sold as producing, so they are sold as possibles until they are proven. Someone please correct me if I got that wrong!

Thanks for the reply. Which lines do we know? And how long before a male proves himself?
Im getting a little boy from the Glider Pet, he is coming on Tuesday for my little girl Fergie

I did see alot of the mosaics and the white variations are the ones that are listed the most being "possibly sterile"

Also, some animals are close enough to bread together, and create offspring, but the genes are far enough apart that they end up sterile. You see it with Ligers. Tiger X Lion. there close enough to breed, but the genes are still not *quite* compatible. I know with Bengal cats (house cat X Asian leopard cat) the first 3 or 4 generations are sterile, where after that they are fine...

Not sure if this applies to gliders, I assume that a sugar glider is a sugar glider, no matter what the color...

My Panda (see avatar) is a platinum white mosaic from Priscilla & he is possibly sterile, you really just need to talk to your breeder & they will tell you anything you want to know. (Provided you have a good breeder)

"Proven" means that they breed with a female & produce joeys, therefore obviously are not sterile! So, this will take several months, provided you already have a female. Consider that he will likely not sexually mature until 7-8 mos OOP, then add on at least another month to wait for the female to go into heat. I would estimate that they would breed for the first time when he is around 9-10 months old. Even if he is not sterile, it may take a few months for her to become pregnant.

Ok, I see and am starting to understand... I will have to ask Priscilla more about our new boy. She said he could be "possibly sterile" but he is not mosaic he is a WFB... I believe both his parents are too, I thought it was mainly mosaics that have the sterile problems in some of the lines

If Priscilla says that he is "possibly sterile", the chances of him being so are very high. His mother is probably a mosaic.

Certain lines have been deemed "sterile", so normally the male offspring out of those lines are sterile. They state them as being possibly sterile because once bred out enough, males could start producing. So far though, I've only heard of one male who produced after he was said to be sterile.

Congrats on your new boy. smile

I have a gorgeous white-face male from Priscilla who is "possibly sterile." I guess it's kind of like a lottery - you're probably not going to win, but it's not impossible. Enjoy your new glider. He's gorgeous too!
