#29296 - 11/10/04 11:26 PM What diet is suitable for my e-collar baby????

Some may have seen me on here earlier. My baby Staples is a self mutilator. He is in a collar while his injury heals, but I have no idea what to feed him. I bought a bird feeder that he can fit inside his collar, but he doesn't seem interested in even his favorite (BML). He simply can't eat normally in the collar but if I take it off even for a second he goes for the injured foot . And although he will eat from me, it takes forever as he eats a little then goes and sleeps then eats a litle more, etc. I love him dearly, but can't stay up all night every night feeding him . And dont want him to go hungry either. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

My snugie has recently had to be in a collar as well. I put some ensure (berry flavored) in his feeder and he seems to enjoy that. It also has vitamins in it. I also rolled a ball of Zookeepers Secret so he could reach it. It worked pretty good, but he really likes the ZooKeepers. I realize that it is very difficult to put his collar back on. Someone(I think it was Sampson) also told me that they would cut up small pieces of fruit and vegies and put it on a flat plate so their snuggie could reach it. I wasn't able to get that to work, but maybe it will work for you. What I did for a while was cut up mealies into small pieces and hold them with tweezers for him to eat. Just don't let him get the exoskeleton or too big of a bite. It is easier for a glider to choke in a ecollar. Your could also try waxworms they are alot softer and easier for them to chew. Hopefully some of this helps.

Kim-try the babyfood fruits/veggies, since he can lick them. My guys like the sweet potatoes, green garden vegetables (also a brownish one they won't touch), and the Gerber tropicals (mango, papaya, guava)-I find the tropicals at Smith's or Kroger-not sure where to look in your area. Ensure is my choice for ones in the collar-almost everything they need and you don't have to dilute it, and easy to eat out of the feeder, also provides liquid at the same time. Mine like HiCalcium vanilla best(sweeter than the regular), there's also strawberry, wild berry, banana, and butter pecan flavors-NO chocolate. And offer yogurt. Our guys favorites are the Dannon LaCreme vanilla or banana creme, or the Yoplait mixed berry or strawberry cheesecake flavors. Avoid the Lites and no fat ones, they tend to have artificial sweeteners that are bad for gliders. Sorry this is rushed, have to go to work. You've got my numbers, and you're welcome to call if you need to.

Almost forgot-as to mealies--If you can stomach it, squish the guts out of the mealie and he can lick them up. I've done that for a couple of very sick gliders.
