I've got new adult gliders and their little nails can hurt when catching me on a long distance glider. What is the best way to trim nails? Is the thing that goes in the wheel any good? If it is, does it permantely stay in the wheel? If it's not the best way when and how do I manually trim the nails?

You're talking about Nail-O-Matic (Wodent Wheel) and TrimTrax (Stealth Wheel).

I have young gliders and use a Wodent Wheel. You insert the NOM in the wheel and it will gradually file the nail down as they run. I like it because 1) They are not totally bonded to me where they'd trust me to clip those nails and 2) Even if they DID trust me, I'd be too scared I'd slip and trim too much and hurt them 3) It's easy. Just insert it in the wheel and let it do it's thing. After the couple of days, you just remove it.

From what I've read, when their nails are too long they can get caught in stuff or snagged in fabric.

The track can only stay in the wheel for 48 hours at a time, or it causes damage to the gliders pads on their feet.

Personally I just clip my gliders nails. There is a good page here: http://www.suzsugargliders.com/nailtrimming.htm

If you choose to use either wheel that has the Nail runner, one thing to keep in mind is that you should not keep the runner in the wheel all the time, because if your gliders use their wheel alot the sandy runner will eventually hurt their feet. I've read where some gliders bottom pads have been rubbed raw. The best is to rotate every two or three days.
You can trim their nails with nail clippers. If your first starting out with doing so it's best to have someone assist you. Your only suppost to trim just the tip of the nail, cutting to short will cut the quik and cause severe bleeding. Here is a terrific link to sugarglidersuz web site on how to trim nails.

Well my gliders are a little weird about their wheel, first off I don't leave the wheel in over night because they stay in my room and i've yet to purchase a stealth wheel, but i usually leave it in till 12am-1am or so. but they will run in the wheel for about 3 or 4 seconds then jump out and do that again 5 minutes later. they are pretty random about it, anyway, would the nail runner need to be in longer?

i wouldnt think so, mine hop in run hop out, if your in the same room with them , i would suggest the stealth wheel, since most of their excercise is at night, if you take out their wheel, they arent getting what they need probally.

With gliders who don't run a lot, you should probably trim them. Otherwise, they'll be getting caught on their pouches.

I think the stealth has some sort of fabric that goes over the trimmer so their nails get trimmed but their feet remain safe! I personally just prefer to clip my suggies' nails. It's easy when they're sleepy/ing esp if you give them a treat to keep them occupied. I give Carm a mealie in each hand and one in mouth and I start at her feet and proceed to the first empty hand smile

Yes, the stealth trim track can be left on the wheel. It only covers part of the track, so their nails don't always touch it. The trim track attaches to the outside of the wheel, so that the track is between their feet and the sandpaper- letting only their nails touch the sandpaper and get trimmed.
