#32708 - 12/29/04 11:54 PM strings+ gliders=death

i just want to tell people about the dangers of hanging pouchs or for any cage toy that has strings. one of my gliders, lost its tail due to one of those strings. i awoke to seeing my glide fluttering around with its tail tangled in the string of its hanging pouch. i quickly cut away the twisted string to free my incaptured baby. to discorver the extent of the injury the fur on his tail was rubbed down it remove hair and skin. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/upset.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/upset.gif" alt="" /> the rope had cut into him while he struggled during the night he had to be put down to the extent of the injury i blame myself for the suffering of my baby but i will never think about putting a string any where near my babies

I am so sorry for your loss... I had a scare with a string once... hopefully this will be a warning for others.

I am so sorry for your loss <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/upset.gif" alt="" />. My prayers are with you at this distressing time.
Thank you for the warning. I will certainly make sure that no strings are within reach of my gliders.

If you want to know what a person is like, watch how he treats others.

You'll never know what the outcome is if you don't step up and try.

I'm very sorry to hear about this. I think we tend to minimize the hazards of deaths due to pouch accidents. I"m not sure what the answer is (maybe nesting boxes with non-fabric bedding?), but sometimes I'm not sure we should be using pouches. Even witih well-trimmed nails, accidents can happen. I'm very sorry for your loss.

i agree with u lucy. i would hate to hear anymore tales of this happening to other gliders

Oh Christophe I am so sorry to hear about your poor baby. How heart broken you must be. I had a string incident also. My guy got his foot and tail entangled in a loose string in his pouch. I felt just so guilty for not being more attentive. Luckily my guy escaped with his life minus a toe and part of his tail, but I still feel horrible. Thanks for adding this post to remind us all of this danger. I am sorry you had to suffer a loss to learn this. Many hugs and you are in my prayers tonight.

I hope you feel better soon. I never heard of a glider getting hurt by the cage pouch but I guess that's because I only use pouches that clamp to the cage with clips. And I make sure all strings are filled up with toys.

Dawnie, most string accidents involving pouches are the threads that the pouches are sewn together with. You should do regular safety checks of your pouches to make sure they are not freying or coming unsewn.
Judge not until you have walked in their shoes and lived their lives. What you see online is only part of the story.

I could have missed the pain
But I'd of had to miss the dance
