#332687 - 07/06/07 10:01 PM Urinary Tract Infection???

I tried to look under the search info and couldnt get a answer.

Tonight when my gliders woke up I noticed Jack was making a funny noise when peeing. I guess you could say a hiss but then other noises. Hard to explain, clicks and stuff?? So I took him out of the cage and played with him and he was peeing all over me but not making any noises. Could this be a start of a UTI or am I making a big deal out of maybe nothing??

Beside hissing what else are the symptoms??

The clicks and stuff sounds like normal, I'm happy to be up sounds. BUT...if this is a new thing for him, get him in to be checked out. In the meantime, make sure they have fresh water. If you think maybe...make sure you clean the cage, just in case. Like I said, if it's not normal, go to the vet.

Thanks. Im going to give the cage a good cleaning tomorrow and keep a close eye on him. If it continues then he's going to the vet!

If Jack is hissing while he is urinating, that may be a sign of urinary tract infection. It could be crystals in his urine, and those are painful when he pees.

I experienced the same thing with my glider Sparkles. She was taken to the vet because I noticed she would hiss when she peed right when she got up, but she wouldn't do it again when we were playing. So she was put on an antibiotic. I noticed her doing it again one month later, so she went back to the vet for the same antibiotic. Another month later, same thing, hissing while she pees. So this time we went to the vet, she did another urinalysis, checked the PH and said she had some calcium oxalate crystals in her urine, the PH level was 7. She was put on 2 different antibiotics than the 2 previous ones and she is on them longer than before. She still has about a week and a half to go for her medicine, but she is doing better.

With all that said, I think it's best to take Jack to the vet! I hope everything goes well! Let us know what you find out!

I agree with taking them to the vet, its normal for gliders to make some noises when they first wake up, but i dont think its EVER normal for them to make a noise while peeing. It is definitely a call for a vet.

have you noticed that the urine smells stronger, that is also a sign that there is a UTI. I know this sounds gross, but when they pee, hold a paper towel up to him and let him pee on that. Then look at it, if it is darker than usual, and smellier than usual, it most likely is a UTI

good luck and keep us updated!!

Oh yea, a little cranberry juice in the water wouldnt hurt. Also, i believe apple cider vinegar in the water is good for that, but iw ould wait till someone comes along to agree with me firs.t

Thanks for all the advise. I'll call the vet tomorrow.

Blndgrl8 mentioned Calcium oxalate stones. Those usually form in acidic urine (pH < 7), and are not particularly associated with infection. They often occur when the diet is high in oxalates and can be aggravated by excessive vitamin C and other dietary intake such as high protein.

Struvite stones are usually caused by infection. Proteus and Klebsiella infections can lead to alkaline urine (pH > 7) and excessive urea (ammonium ion). Then the struvite can form. Struvite is ammonium magnesium phosphate.

Depending on which kind of stone, there is often a very different cause of the crystals and stones.

Struvite is radio-opaque (shows up on x-rays.) Spinning down urine and looking for stones under the scope is easy.

Many stones are asymptomatic and are just found by accident.

Schlep-would you suggest an Xray, possibly, to see? What sorts of foods in the diet could cause this-I mean, I know spinach is high in oxalic acid, which is one of the reasons to be very careful with it, along with the very high iron content. Since this little girl is having issues peeing, is there a possibility there is more than one thing going on? Or could there be a processing problem where for some reason normal amounts are being retained?

We just had a glider (in health) diagnosed with scurvy-most diets aren't overly high in vit. C, but I'd suppose that if citrus and other high C foods were eaten frequently along with the amounts in the vitamins, or too much source of oxalates, it could cause an issue (and the hard part is analyzing diet, lol, at least for me-headaches there), and high protein can also be a factor? How much protein are we talking about?

Bldgrl8-we may need to go to the examining board and tear your diet apart as well. Sometimes it's foods that facilitate absorption of certain vitamins/minerals in another, also.

Back on thread topic:
I agree with getting a vet check. Just took one of mine (Troi) this morning for a urinalysis-Cole (my son) called me yesterday and said "Mom, Troi just came out of the pouch-2pm) and hissed when she peed. Then she ran into the back corner of the cage and was licking at her cloaca. She isn't SMing, but looks uncomfortable". I made an appointment for 9 am this morning, and we ran a urinalysis, that came back with white blood cells and a little blood in the urine, and a pH of 7.5 (glider's urinary pH should be between 6.5 and 7, with 7 being the high end of normal). So now she's on amoxicillin for 14 days. tounge
