#338489 - 07/14/07 12:43 AM Questions about genetics (albinos)

This is kind of a generic question, but it def. pertains to the breeding of sugar gliders.

First let me say, i have NO intentions of breeding, but my fiance and i were talking about white tips, black eyed whites, and albinos. I said to him that the black eyed whites were bred that way, and the albinos were a gene mutation..

Here's my question (might be stupid but i know NOTHING about genetics) can you BREED for albinos? or is it just a random gene mutation that, as far as we know, happens for no reason.

I guess i am just soo lost on the whole genetics thing that i had NO answer for him.

Yes - you can breed for albino - it works the same as leucistic (if you breed two hets, you will get one out of four albino joeys)...etc...

While albinos can occur from normal parents, they are a seperate gene. This means that they can be bred for, and that's why albino hets are possible.

Just like in humans...you could definitely have an albino glider randomly (but that would be extremely rare)

See, way far back, I'm sure SOMEWHERE that there was an albino in your gliders ancestry. The further back it is, the lesser the chance there will be of your glider producing an albino baby.

But it depends on both parents.

Atleast that's how I think I understand it after being on that other thread for a while...

Albinism is just a mutation, it results from a mutated gene. A mutated gene is simply that; a mutated gene. It can come from normal genes... they just mutate. It's spontaneous. By some factor of abnormality, hormonal imbalance during early development, etc.

But an albino already has the mutated gene to pass on. That's why they can make albino babies.

ohh i see.. i wasnt sure that a mutated gene could be passed on. i kinda figured that the gene mutation happens during the building of the glider and that its normal reproductive genes are the same as any other glider.

thanks for clarifying that for me..
