How young can the joey be when offered mealies? I have always waited until they were out and eating on their own but have wondered if they can have them younger?

I try a little of everything as early as three weeks old.. but they're never interested in ANY food that early. lol. Unless they're trying to steal it from Mom or Dad's mouth.. I notice.. that they're intrested in yogurt drops around 4 weeks.. and interested in mealies shortly thereafter.. but some.. just.. aren't. Henessey was chowing down on mealies at 5 weeks.. but Killian.. now seven weeks.. still wants nothing to do with them. lol. But he'll come around.. i'm sure of it. teehee. lol. Luv Ames!!

Thanks Amy!!!!!!!!! Nickolas is trying to nibble my finger and it got me thinking. I figured it was still to soon. He is 26 days oop now.
Things are so different with this joey. All my other joeys rode on their parents back from soon oop. Not this little guy. He stays in the nest box. I bought a scale today and he weighs 34 grams. It that about where he should be? He seems healthy.
Sorry, I got off topic.

WellI couldn't tell you on weight..I NEED to get a scale.. but dont yet have one. It's one of those many many things on my want list. lolol. But I will tell you.. that many of my joeys a pouch-babies.. and don't leave the pouch until they're able to on their own.. probably because my parents like that time to themselves.. and tell them off if they want rides.. lol.. So I try to babysit as much as possible, so Mom and Dad can get some alone time. lolol.

ANYway.. he's almost four weeks old already?!?! I swear it seems like he was just born yesterday.. lol. Well he should definitely be interested in the treats soon. Try some yogurt, or babyfood, or even a yoggie piece.. you might have to lick it first.. lol.. I know that sounds silly.. but sometimes they're not sure it's edible until you show them.. if it's wet.. for some reason.. it tastes better. lol. And if you try mealie.. poke a hole it it first.. or cut it in half.. he might love it if he's trying to eat his grandmum already.. hehee. lol. Luv Ames!!

Mine usually get their first taste of mealies through pirating some of the ones that their parents have already split open and killed, ick! I stop in during the day to drop off some mealies and the youngsters usually get curious at about 5-6 weeks on average. Most don't start taking them down on their own entirely until a bit later. I've found that joeys learn a lot of stuff by example and eating insects is one of them. They of course can learn to eat bugs otherwise, it's just much easier to teach through the parents.

Teresa, as for weight Bourbon and I were discussing that last night and 34g is a good weight for Nikolas to be at right now. I believe it was betweed 34 and 40 for 3-4 weeks oop (I am sure if I am off a bit, B will come correct me )
As for the pouch thing, Dashers first night out of the pouch on his own was last night and oh so cute...I was sitting there watching him and he wouldnt go very far at first just up and down the side of it...when he started going towards the food dish, Pepper(dad) started barking and Dasher went running back to the pouch (if THAT is what you want to call running ) a few minutes later he stopped barking and Dasher started investigating, even got into the wheel. Prior to that though, even in the tent, Bear(mom) would come collect him from me at times and take him right back to the pouch, drop him in there and come back out to play. I of course, would than take him back out and love on him!! (bad grandma)
He is nibbling on the sunmaid fruit pieces I give for treats, and I have also seen him nibbling on the stuff in the food dish last night, but no mealies yet.

I think you are doing a good job (well so is mom and dad) with Nikolas, sounds like he is right on track and I sure am enjoying watching this guy grow up!
Hope this gives a little to compare to, to give you some ideas, but as we know each glider is different...Look at Judies big boy!!

Thanks so much Peggy. All my other joeys always were riding piggy back right away and although this little one is/seems healthy (and I think absolutely adorable) I was just alittle concerned about him not being out and about.
He was nibbling my fingers last night so I got a grape half and he sort of nibbled. More licked then anything.
Glad to know he is on track.

BigErn, I usually leave the raising up to the parents and have great luck so far. I figure no one can teach a baby like the parents. (with the exception of some humans!) I just like to babysit a bit. Ok, I like to babysit alot!!!
