our knewest girl nicky...is a groundwalker..its weird maddy our other girl will NOT touch the ground for any length of time ...but nicky runs all around on the floor..so we have had to glider proof the whole room instead of just the bathroom..anyone else have this issue? is this normal? can i break the habit?

Sure, my little SugarBear does that! He loves scampering all over the floor. When we have our playtime, he'll jump out of the cage and onto me, then, POOOOF, he'll jump to the draperies, scamper around, but he'll end up on the floor and just run all over the place!

He has to see everything, everywhere. Yeah, glider-proofing a whole room is the way to go. It's funny, he'll run acrossed the floor, then, scale my large speakers, just like a little SpiderMan.

We have two that don't climb much. Riker doesn't glide, either. It's just who he is and I don't think there's anything that will "break" them of it, it's just in that particular gliders nature, unless they decide otherwise. Riker just scampers around on whatever surface I put him on, be it floor, bed, tent, etc. and has no interest in going elswhere. Gimli, however, doesn't have a tail, and his balance is affected, especially if he tries to glide he ends up crashing instead, so for him it's a matter of safety. You may be able to encourage with treats to get them to climb or glide to you, a slow process, but I don't think it's an issue that can be forced.

my two gliders run arounf on the ground all the time they'll climb up my blanket on my wall once in a while (we have a futon that skatches the paint off the wall) but other wise they are always on the floor hopping around. It's normal I don't really think there is any way to make them stop running on the floor.

[:"green"]My gliders all love the floor. There really isn't any reason to "break" a glider of this habit that I can think of... Let him enjoy himself wherever he can!

Yup, I have one too! Out the cage door, down to the floor, and off! I personally don't see anything wrong with it if you have a glider proof room, but there is a way to break them of the habit if you really wish too. Get a grocery bag (the plastic kind), and put it where the glider doesn't really "see" it. When he goes to the floor, use your foot to make noise...do this consistently. Warning, this does scare them...I think they must associate it with leaves rustling like in the wild...they get scared.

im not real worried about breaking her of it....shes just hard to catch and it seems to scare her when i do actually have to put her up and kinda seems like its not helping our bonding process....but if its not a big deal then im cool with it...thanks

I have a glider that loves to run around on the floor as well. She kind of reminds me of a dog. She doesn't like to jump of glide and won't go somewhere unless she can reach out and touch it, she won't just hop down from places. She also will come running up to you when called and sit at your feet waiting for a treat. She's silly. I my Honey Bunchkins.

hehe...i think nicky's just smart...she glides a little bit but not much...she knows the only way out of the bathroom is to walk..where as maddy will NOT leave the bathroom...weird.

Mario & Luigi are brothers, once having shared mommy's pouch. Alike in many ways, but Mario runs on the floor all the time, and Luigi won't ever touch the floor - like it was hot acid. It's how I tell them apart in the dark.

I think the term for these guys is "floor gliders".

And yes, I have several of them as well. They don't just run...but rather hop full speed ahead with a stop here and there. Little tails look like fluffed radar antennas.

With a floor glider...one needs to be extra carefull to watch where they place there feet when walking and when closing a door to prevent an unfortunate accident.

And don't forget to check the spacing under the door. If over a half inch...a small glider may slip under before you realize it. I know...as my Sesamie who has been allowed to run in a glider proofed room since a baby....and one night she suprised me (she was a year and half oop.) ...when she suddenly disappeared and my little dog was in hot pursuit for dinner...Sesamie. The little floor glider managed to escape by running under a living room chair. Since then we put a metal strip on the bottom of the door.

Take extra care during playtime with the little floor glider.

Both mine will scamper on the floor - but only in transit from one thing to the next. When I have them in the living room, they'll get sick of it eventually and hop down to the floor to run all the way across the kitchen, down the hall, past the bathroom, and back into the bedroom where their cage is.

Watching them trying to stop or change directions on a tiled floor is hilarious . . .

Yup Yup, Zoe is a floor glider and man is she fast! She can change directions like nobody's business! Monster, on the other hand, thinks the floor is hot lava! Can't possibly touch it, or you'll burn up! You should see her freak out trying to get back up onto something when she falls!

Reminds me of a story once...Misu has his "path" downpat on the floor....one time I had put a floor rug down (no big deal), and off he went....well, we he was approaching the rug at full speed, I guess it wasn't familiar to him, and he literally went straight up in the air about 2ft (not kidding), and over the rug. Poor guy, but I sure was .

My old glider Taz was definately a floor glider, he loved it on the floor. He would climb and glide too, but his favourite thing was running around on the floor. He'd follow me all over the house, right at my heels. Xander though, although usually the only time he's out running free is because he's evaded me, lol, is always trying to get as high as possible. I am not sure if it is a fear thing, or if he's naturally like that. Once he is more bonded I will be able to tell for sure. But I don't think you would want to break her of it, I think its great. I think the floor gliders probably get more exercise because they run all over more, whereas most other gliders climb up and just wander around on the curtains or whatever they happen to be on. This is good for bonding too! Stay on the floor with her, she'll get used to you faster because she'll be crawling around and on you more!

heheh they are a joy are they not? my Asia likes to floor "prance" with her tail in the air, and has since learned how to houdini out of the cage when she wants to play (despite three finger latches on one door!). She has also learned that jumping on my bed from and to the cage repeatedly will wake me so i can entertain her. i dont know how many times this week she has woken me up with "whump, sproing! whump sproing!" and her little bright eyes fill with joy when she sees me sit up ever so carefully (thank goodness i dont sleep heavy!) so she can jump all over me....the human playground....
what a lil nut....love her tho.. they will never cease to suprise and amaze you... sounds like yours are taking turns on the floor? heheh

I would have to say our Mango is a floor glider too, he does love to be on my shoulder, in a pocket, and rubbed all over but eventually he likes to get down and explore the floor. We actually got him one of those hamster type balls and he LOVES it, he rolls all over the house and the nice thing is that I can actually take my eyes off him for a few minutes and not worry about him it’s great! Has any one else tried a Hamster / Guinea pig (sp?) ball for their ‘floor glider’?

The twins are both ground walkers (when on me they head straight down my body and legs to the floor and off they go) and Lilo & Stitch freak out when they see their babies on the ground (they both act like the floor is going to eat them if they land on it)...They call to them and make "scolding noises" at them all to no avail as the twins refuse to go to them...And since they hate the floor they will only go so far to try to get their babies...I guess since they know I am right there nothing will happen to their babies...

They are quite fun to watch tho...tails straight up hopping all over the place....

It reminds me of a radio controled car, zooming aroung the floor with that tail straight up.

I have a hampster ball. Peanut refuses to go into it. and I actually got tails in it once, I think she has hated me ever since. She is not bonded well yet at all. She sleeps almost all the time except to come out for her food and a little romp here and there in her cage. Sometimes I get worried that shes even ok in there. But she is content. lol. But yes, I would love to let my little ones play in a bigger space. I was thinking of getting one of those like huge net type canopies that go over ones bed in the jungle or wherever. And put it up so that it encumbased the whole room and the gliders could have a huge play area. but Im not sure where to find one of those.
also I would love to let my babies run around the living room. But Im not sure exactly where to start on the glider proofing.
