I've got a male that extended his penis last night without retracting it. I read that this is a somewhat normal behavior and he is around 2 females that are maturing sexually (6 mos. oop). Male has been neutered for approx 2 mos.
Questions are: 1. How long does this typically last? 2. Should I separate him from the females? they seem really interested in the area right now. 3. Any warning signs to distinguish this from normal behavior?
Just in case it's UTI, we do normally mix cranberry juice in with the BML formula (Judy's) and last night gave a little more by dish.

Also keep an eye on him. If it looks like it is getting dark in color or if he starts to show excessive attention, take him to the vet before he can self mutilate. Any change in behavior is an indication that a vet check is in order. Better safe then sorry.

If it stays out and won't retract even with K-Y by tomorrow I'd go for a vet visit then. Above all, keep it moist! Watch for him messing with it, or chewing on the area. If you hear him making unusual noises, kind of like a crab/hiss while paying attention to the area, be ready to get him in an e collar and go to the vet. Watch for any signs he's been chewing on the area-any unusual discoloration even if it's just a spot or two-if he does he'll need to be in a collar until he can get to a vet. I haven't even seen my neutered guys' hang out at all even when around females in heat unless there was something going on, but that's mine. Also make sure the girls don't mess with it too much, which could start him doing it. Normally in an unfixed male, it does hang out on occasion, but usually not long enough to dry out, and they retract it. I honestly haven't seen any of my neutered males out since they were neutered. I'd keep a close eye on things. Keep us updated! Just in case it becomes necessary(and I hope it doesn't), here's the link to the ecollar directions: E-Collar

Well all, we've got some bad news, but are still hopeful. Wilbur's penis was still out early this morning and was reddening. We called the vet right away and got there by 9 AM. The first thing the vet did was to apply an anaesthesia gas and manipulate his penis back to place. He woke up with some thrashing about in a semi-conscious state and began to aggressively bite and pull at the extended penis. We quickly got him back to be gassed again, this time with a stitch in place to hold everything in place. When he woke up this time, it took about 2 seconds to bit the stitch out. Gassed again, this time with a stitch and a collar made from stiff x-ray film. Now, I know everyone thinks their glider is the sweetest one in the world, but we got Wilbur at 5 years old and he came from a home where he was the only glider. He also ran out of the cage at weill, disappearing for weeks. You'd think he'd have a hard time adjusting, but he has been happy to have his face, chin and belly rubbed at will from day one. He's a good guy. Wilbur was biting and latching on to both the vet assistant and myself. It was really sad to see him fight the collar, with all four feet, squeaking and wimpering. I called the vet back for a sedative and drove back for the hour round-trip to pick up some meds to calm him down. Maybe the meds, maybe he just tired himself out from stressing, but he finally got to sleep. He was thrashing about again later, I opened up the cage to check on him and found that his penis is once again extended. I think he probably got it with a hand or foot. It's really looking red and swollen and I can't imagine how he's going to keep it. As he walked on the floor, he was definitely low to the ground, trying to somehow scratch it on the floor. Back to sleep and know a worn-out sluggishness. Again, don't know if it's the meds or the stress. We've been spoon feeding some water, cranberry juice and water and a few bites of yogurt. He's turned down worms but ate a really good amount of apple and pear -- probably feeling dehydrated from the repeated gas exposure. We got some lidocaine on the shaft to numb it, which seems to be helping some. Right now he's asleep on my wife's shoulder, with his head and collar tucked into her hair. They've both been asleep over an hour and I'll let them stay a while and then we'll move him to the carry case for the night. It's smaller than the cage, but he can't be in with the others and our separate cage has too many places incompatible with the collar. We'll be getting to the vet at first availability, probably for an amputation, and hoping that his urinary function isn't impaired. Hoping the SM behavior doesn't return either. Will post more when I can, but hoping against the worst.

Did the vet by chance do a UA along with a C&S? Did he by perscribe an antibiotic such as Baytril? Most problems that are penis related are due to UTI's. Prep H has been used with good results. It has a slight sedative effect and also will help to reduce the swelling of the inflamed tissue.

Would really recommend a Urinalysis on this guy, and cloacal stitches have been known to only make the problem worse, since it further traps bacteria in there. It can't be completely closed, or they can't eliminate. Keep applying the KY as long as it's out, and please have urine and fecals run. It does sound like he's got a Urinary Tract Infection going on. I have had sucess with either a valium suspension or torb for relieving the discomfort while the antibiotic has a chance to work. Keep us updated, now I'm really worried for your guy! Believe me, I have a mutilator, and have been through two UTI's with him. He needs an antibiotic to treat what is causing this. At worst, it won't hurt him. Keep it moist, treat the cause, not the symptoms. Amputation will keep it from hanging out, sure, but if there's an infection it won't help at all, and won't stop the SM=he'll just chew his cloacal area instead because he hurts. If tests haven't been run yet, I'm begging you to have your vet do them. A urinalysis isn't all that expensive, and neither are the meds.

Another update: The ends have definitely turned black; they're trimming the necrotic end tissue at another emergercy vet that's open today. We'd been trying to keep them moist, but they're turned really about following his violent attack on himself after coming out of the anaesthesia yesterday. He's already on a prophylactic antibiotic regimine, since he hasn't beeing urinating enough for a urinalysis. He's been separated from the girls for two nights now and is adjusting to the collar with the tranqs. Will give more updates as we can. My wife is still at the vets now and I'll hopefully know more soon.

I would also make sure to watch very closely for any signs of SM. You will hear a loud very abnormal noises. Make sure to put an E collar on them and call a vet. I also agree with the KY jelly to make sure nothing gets chapped or dry.

Yep, he's had the collar on for 2 days. Regrettably, he can still get it with his hands, but not nearly as badly. He's on the way home from the other vet now. Had x-rays to rule out any stones and continuing with the antibiotics. My wife said she was really happy with this vet, took lots of time to explain, took her in the back to show the research supporting the decisions, etc. They even had him on a warmer while he was recovering from the anaesthesia -- top notch. So, looks like the plan is: * Continue antibiotics for possible infection * Keep collar on until after the penis retracts and follow-up * Continue to lube and apply steriodal for inflammation * Keep him separated in a separate cage * Hand feed and water * Use tranqs if he stresses over the collar * Apply lots of love

sounds like you are doing all that could be done for the little guy. Hope he improves soon. I hate to hear about your gliders problems but it is good to hear that we have glider owners that find a good vet and take the proper care of them. I am proud of you for the way you have handled this emergency. Charlie H

Only thing I can add, having been there-is watch for signs of constipation. The pain meds can cause that really well. Make sure he's getting plenty of fluids! Great job! Keeping your guy in our prayers!

Very sorry to report that it doesn't look like Wilbur is going to make it. His shaft is still really inflamed at the base and then it goes very red in a weird right hand turn. He makes a very, very sad whimpering cough when he tries to urninate, defecate or anything else that puts pressure on the area. Even minor touches with a little bit of lube really hurt him. We're still hand feeding as much as possible, but he's taking less. My wife spent all night on the couch, with him currled up on her stomach and he didn't move all night. As soon as it starts getting more into the day, we're going to see if we can find an emergency vet to put him down today or tomorrow. The two things that are really sad about this are: 1. How quickly this all happened. The penis extended on Wednesday night and despite two trips to the vets and $600, it doesn't seem to help. Maybe one of the girls bit it at the shaft or who knows, but I never expected this timeline. 2. And how sweet poor Wilbur really is. How many gliders can be in serious pain, have a collar on and still take licky food and water off your finger without even a nibble? He's a real champ. I won't repost regarding the finality, but thanks to all for their thoughts.

Please do not put him down unless it's absolutely necessary! Give him more of a chance to pull through this. Some people on this board have gone through h*ll and back with their gliders, only to have them come through it in the end.

I am so sorry to hear this sad news. You, your wife and Wilbur are in my prayers. Saying goodbye to one of these little ones is never easy and making the decission to end his suffering is such a hard thing to do. My thought and prayers go out to you in hopes to easy your minds and your hearts. Only you are there with Wilbur and only you can know what is best for him. I am sure Wilbur knows he is loved.

I don't know what to say. I wish I was closer and could help. I had to forcefeed Riker for weeks when he was in his collar, to keep him going until the meds had a chance. He pulled through, but it was touch and go for quite a while. I wish nobody had to go through this with their baby. Have you tried food/liquids by syringe? On the one hand, I know it's your decision, and on the other I've seen gliders pull through this. I feel awful both for you, and him.

I hope you haven't lost him yet, I live in FL, and am willing to talk to your vet.. I don't understand some things you posted..
Quote:
The first thing the vet did was to apply an anaesthesia gas and manipulate his penis back to place. If that is the case I understand what may have happened, they have 2 shafts coming out of the same hole, one for urinating one for deficating, if the vet pushed it down the wrong shaft or damaged the shaft, he would experience a lot of severe pain. I could understand why the glider would be ripping at it. PLEASE contact someone at the sm site... please I hope it is not too late for Wilber.
