#34448 - 01/21/05 03:19 AM Male vs. Female for 1st glider?

Ok, I need everyone's thoughts here. In your honest opinion, which glider is better, male or female? Which sex bonds easier, is more friendly, easier to train, less territorial and moody, etc? I have heard mixed stories on which sex is better to buy. I am a 1st time owner here and I need some insight. Also, do males have to be neutered? Do females have to have anything altered?

I think you'll get a pretty mixed bag of responses as to "which gender is better"

Fact is, neither is really "better", but everyone has different preferences.

Males don't HAVE to be altered, but I wholeheartedly recommend it! Neutered males don't have nearly the odor that intact ones do, and they can be cuddlier and calmer too! No, females don't get anything altered.

I all my gliders of course, but the neutered males seem to be the ones to really steal my heart.

The most important thing when getting your first glider(s), is to get joeys who are well socialized, friendly, and healthy. A really great breeder will be able to help you pick out the perfect little companions.

I think it is less about gender and more about the breeder, honestly.

However, my sweetest glider is a four year old male, Gizmo. He is just exceptionally sweet! My only biter is also a male, Spaz. He is only seven months old though and new to my home.

I've heard from people that males tend to be sweeter and I can't argue with that. But, my Sprocket (one year old female) is a sweet little flirt!

As long as your joey comes from a reputable breeder, than gender shouldn't matter too much. I also don't think my boys stink. Maybe it's just me. I think they smell like brown sugar. I have all of gliders in my bedroom with me and never notice a strong odor or anything from either of them (and Gizmo loves to mark!). Maybe I'm lucky!

The more I read about male gliders, the more worried I get. Maybe a male isn't my best bet for a 1st glider. Between the self-mutalating, extended penis problems, bad neutering issues, etc. I think maybe I should go for a female.

Females can self-mutilate, too... but I wouldn't base a decision on gender off of SM... it really is very rare! They can also have pouch infections, which boys don't have (obviously)

Find a really great breeder... to to their home... and the 2 of you together can help you pick out the perfect joey.

i think it may also help if you stuck around for awhile and read everything you can and learn as much about them as possible before getting a glider, it will probably also steer you towards which one you want. and in the future you will probably get another glider to keep the first one company and it can be the opposite sex to the first so you wont miss out on ne thing

Of course I will love it, it just seems like with all that I am reading, males seem to be more at risk for problems. I am sure I will make up my mind by the time I am ready to get a glider.
