#34687 - 01/24/05 02:02 PM still won't stay in her pouch??? overbonding??

Well, I asked this before and didn't get much information, so I guess I'll try again. A couple weeks ago I posted I'm having a terrible time with Keeva staying in her bonding pouch during the day. She wants to sleep on me ( rather on my back)I bought a bra type pouch with a zipper for when we go bye-bye and if she knows were not at home, she will stay in there without a problem, but at home she will not stay in the pouch. She will bite the zipper or top of the pouch and throw a royal fit till she can come out and sleep on me. She never leaves my body ( ever) but she will sit and watch if I'm folding clothes, doing the laundry, washing dishes, whatever chores I'm working on, she thinks she needs to supervise from my shoulder or chest. In Bourbon's bonding link she said to wear 2 shirts and let them crawl around on you to bond, I did that ONCE and now, she doesn't wanna get off me! Even though she is a single glider ( due to circomstances beyond my control, i just can't seem to get enough funds together for a friend for her)I spend several hours a day with her, during the day and night, and she is completely spoiled rotten. Can a glider be over-bonded to a person?? Are all gliders this neurotic about being on thier humans during sleepy time?? Are all bonded gliders this velcro-ey???
She is to the point she doesn't wanna be off of me even during playtime unless she is in her cage!

It seems your glider loves you alot. That is how gizmo is and when I put her up I swear she gave me the most dirty look and the world. I got her cage mate and shes calm down a bit. But she still love to sleep on me. I hope this help alittle. If not i'm sure some others will come along and give you some great advice.

better over-bonded than not bonded at all.

You are so lucky she loves you that much and always wants to be with you. Not all gliders are so nice. I would love a glider to be that attached to me.

Your Glider and my glider should hook up. I've only had her for about 5 days or so but she is acting the same way. She wont stay in her pouch, she wants to go to my Back and sit right in the center while we walk around, then goes to my shoulder to watch whre were going.
She still dont like "hands" but shell jump to my wrist and up my arm.
I do have 1 question though. I have'nt been brave enough to put my hand in her pouch because she crabs when I open it and put my fingers near there, then snaps at me a little from a distance. Do I have to actually do this? i'm scared to get bitten, I know it wont hurt much but man..I hate that noise so I pull away.

You are lucky. She loves you a lot.
She just might be lonely a bit too. If this becomes to you (sorry for lack of a better word) a tad bothersome I suggest getting a buddy. This did not hurt my bonding at all with sydney. It did however make it much easier in that she had a cuddle buddy in her pouch. She still runs out to sit on my shoulder but I dont feel so bad if she has to be in a pouch when im at work or a place where I cant let her out.

You might try adopting another glider to give her a friend.

Jaygrae, I had that prob w/ miracle. Put some babyfood or some treat on your finger and hold it out of reach. JUst be very still and hold it there until the glider calms down and moves towards the treat.....mmmmmm..yummy.....humans hands...good!

I have the same problem, but I can't say that Xander is too bonded, lmao. He just doesn't like being confined. Whenever I try to keep him in a pouch or anything he takes a fit and tries to get out with all his might. I'm hoping just time helps. If anyone has any tips though, that would be great too

That's definitely a good thing. I've had Shelby since Sunday and I just got a new bonding pouch in the mail and tried to get her into it and she started crawling all over me and slept in my hoody front pocket for a while. She was crawling all over me and I was opening up a package with treats in it and she got a little scared and ran up my arm and hid behind me shoulder. I looked at her and then took one out and gave it to her and she loved it. She's actually sleeping under my hood right now on my back. This is definitely a surprise considering I didn't expect her to start bonding this soon. I must be doing something right!!!

Anyways, I wouldn't worry about overbonding. Frankly the more bonded the glider is, the better the pet right? I hope my Shelby ends up being that loveable towards me. I guess I'm on the right track though.

My first suggestion to you is that you're upsetting her natural cycle by even having her out during the day, unless you're keeping the rooms you're in very dark! My families come out to play with me around 8pm(ish) when the sun has long since gone down. I've learned the hard way that they have to have sunlight to know when it's their bedtime: I tried to put a BIG piece of felt over the window in their room to keep it warm during the cold Indiana winters---that just royally confused them, they were up ALL THE TIME then cranky as all get-out when it was time for out-of-cage play.

I also agree with others that you're blessed how strongly she's bonded to you. You are her sole source of security, and habits started from the beginning of a relationship are difficult to break later on. It doesn't matter if you're talking about animal or human being, some things started are a big regret later on. (Take my "spoiled rotten" crew for instance: ever since I introduced crickets to their diet, that's the FIRST thing they go for when it's feeding time! They also love their pecans, pumpkin seeds, GliderAide & this flavor of yogurt but not that....and BML is something they DON'T care about, despite my best efforts to try EVERY recipie I can get my hands on...I've ended up feeding every one to the trash can & that makes me ANGRY)

Yes, it's possible that she needs a friend of her own species to "free" you up....I might be able to help you out there without distressing your budget! E-mail me directly and we can discuss this further. I probably won't be able to read incoming messages til Sunday; my "dance card" is rather busy between right now & then, plus my "other pets" like to monopolize the modem!

And Jay, the only thing you're lacking is EXPERIENCE!! I've been bitten many a times playing peacemaker between two males (mind you, one was in his cage defending his territory over "the other male" dancing on the outside...brave is one thing, stupid is another) or when someone thinks they should be entitled to more out-of-cage playtime, or one of the "kids" mistakes my finger for a cricket treat. And the noise, I'll agree with you, can be rather irritating. But that's their natural defense tactic--the first 4 weeks after my babies emerged, that was all I heard from them the whole time I was in the room! Yummy treats help reduce the crabbing, and PERSISTENCE with treats will shut off the noise...eventually. I personally find the crabbing to work as a very effective alarm system...if one of the cats sneaks into the room, you oughta hear about 4 of them shouting! Guaranteed to get your attention!!

Hi Michele! How is your husband feeling? How are you feeling? I will attest to what Michele (TreasureKY) wrote above- she has tried to get Keeva a friend and preventative circumstances come up. My first glider Anna is bonded to me like Keeva is bonded to you. I can have 6 pouches around my neck and she'll still dive down my shirt. She is a single glider as well. I've tried to wear 2 shirts so she can crawl close to my body but in between the shirts- she doesn't like that either. She doesn't like it if she isn't right next to my skin. I've got constant claw marks all over my upper half. She drinks from my glass, eats from my plate, and when I first got her almost 2 years ago, when I was teaching and taking her school everyday, she adjusted her sleeping pattern to my schedule. (She's back to nocturnal now- I'm at a different school and she can't come every day) She was up during the day, and asleep at night. That wasn't necessarily my intention, but it was her choice. When I do put her in a pouch, she'll fight and fuss and try her hardest to get out. She thinks that I belong to her and I should be at her beck and call.

Hi hun!! He is doing much better now, still sick, but doing better. Ty for asking!!

Even when I have Keeva out rather in a pouch, or snoozing on me, she still wakes up at 9:30pm every night. Not even 5 mins late! You could set an alarm to her!!
