I have read alot of posts about watching out for loose strings. This got me thinking about using ribbons in their cage, don't they shred them with their sharp nails and cause a hazard of getting tangled?

I have never used ribbons in my gliders cage and I don't think I will. Plastic and fleece seem to be the 2 best toy making materials from my experiences.

Potentially they could be a hazard in the cage, but they make a good out of cage playtime toy .

I believe ribbons to be safe provided they are not long enough to tangle around the glider. I have seen (and made) many toys with ribbon on them. I have not heard a single tale of a glider getting hurt with the exception of draw strings on bonding pouches when they are also used as sleeping pouches. Alot of gliders will pull the long neck straps or draw strings into the pouch with them and risk getting tangled in them.
As for toys though, I have used many many toys over the years with ribbons without incident.

All just my opinions!

I also have made ribbon teasers for my gliders and they don't seem to shread them at all, The do love to play with them though.. its a good way to get the out of the pouch!! I also use ribbon when making my pouches to hang with, and for other things also and have never had a problem. But like Teresa said just make sure it can't wrap around there body and get tied in anyway. As long as it is a lose ribbon and not able to tie it should be alright i think!

i always hang ribbons on branches of from the top of cage all over the place, and they love to collect them and carry in their tails. next morning all ribbons are in whichever pouch/nest box they decided to stay in for the day. lol

I was making them as toys but stoped for the same thinking but I do let them play with them out of the cage in there room only if I am in there.

awww, that sounds so cute chral i will have to try that. I just saw something that looked like the ribbon that you would tie on a present to make a bow.. do yall know what i mean?? Is that what your talking about cause i don't think that would be good to have in there with them.. the ribbon i was saying is safe is the cloth type that you buy at the fabric stores, not at like the gift wraping stuff. Does anyone know what i mean lol, or am i going crazy?

I'm going to have to agree with everyone on this one. I am a pro-ribbon user myself and, like Dancing, have made and used several play toys with ribbon for 8 years, without problems.

No, i did mean gift wrapping ribbon. I don't think it's dangerous. i would think cloth would be more prone to getting nails caught etc. I'm talking about curly wrapping ribbons. my guys love them alot and in 2 years not ever a problem. just my two cents.

[:"brown"]As with any toy if you check it regularly then it should be safe, I have used ribbions before but remove after being washed a few times.[/]

I have toys with ribbons on them in my cages that are at least a year old now and they have held up perfectly fine, i even throw all my stuff in the washing machine. If i see a little fraying on the end, i snip off the tip. I do have a glider that likes to shred her ribbon, but she rats it like a dred lock, it doesnt fray into pieces she can get tangled in, she just mangles the thing. If that makes any sense. I have never had a ribbon accident in my cage. I dont recomend using ribbon on cage pouches to attach your hooks to, for some reason mine always tear those ribbons up. Maybe its just my weirdo's.

Dont use a ribbon with a loose weave that might catch a nail, or an embroidered ribbon with loose threads on the back.

Kayla, you know i think your wonderful but i have to disagree... I have used the ribbons for my cage pouches for a long time now and havn't had them rip, tear, fray, or anything. But i did just switch to using a flat type of cloth string instead i think it looks nicer and is thiner to work with. But anywho i havn't had any ribbon problems with my gliders before.

I use grosgrain ribbon as the loops on the pouches I make, and have been for almost 4yrs., with no accidents. When the ends of ribbon are exposed, that's where the danger of fraying is. Keeping the loose ends snipped off of toys and checking daily should be ok .

I have to say, I have a BAZILLION different cage pouches from Karin, and she uses ribbon as loops and not one time have I EVER had any kind of problem with them. Believe me, they have been washed and washed and definitely used...
I think it all depends on the person who makes them and if they truly have the saftey of the glider in mind and are willing to go that extra mile to make sure it is glider safe before offering it to their gliders and/or the public.
