My dog and 2 cats have ticks. I have tried frontline and it doesnt work on my dog and there are ticks in our yard. We live in condos so even if we spray our yard ( which we have already done) they are most likely in the other yards too. How can I get rid of them in a way that wont harm my SUGGIES and REPTILES ?
Please help, We are getting very frustrated ! cry tant

There are still a lot of people missing from the board...hopefully someone will help soon, but if the board goes back to normal...you will probably have to resubmit your post.

Frontline helps with fleas, but doesn't work with ticks. There is a powder that you can put down in the yard that doesn't hurt animals, but kills insects. Borax? No... I'll have to look it up.

Once they are on the dog/cat, I would have them dipped. Ticks can KILL animals if left untreated. It's nasty. I've seen two dogs die that way - just sucked dry. (When I worked at the vet, not my pets.)

Let me go look up that powder stuff for you...

Okay - put gravel or wood chips a yard wide along the edges of your yard to keep them from coming in from neighbors yards. This can be on either side of the fence. Keep the lawn mowed and raked as ticks like damp, shady areas.

Apparently, garlic spray will also repel ticks. dunno Still can't find the powder!

Frontline should work on the ticks. It can take up to a week to work sometimes. My dog had ticks and I washed her with the tick shampoo and then put frontline. They went away in a few weeks but I did remove the ones that were already attached. If frontline does not work try another topical flee treatment...Advantage, Advantix, etc

the powder stuff we used in our yard is called diatomaceous earth, we got it at a garden supply store. It kills ants, fleas, ticks, spiders..

YES...I would buy some sort of spray and spray the furniture...vacuuming should pick up any in the carpet. When my puppy got ticks..It seemed to take forever to get rid of them even though it was only one week. One day I was sitting in class and something bites me...sure enough there was a tick on my shoulder! They can spread everywhere but need some sort of food supply to survive.

Powder is Sevin and made by Ortho. Can purchase it at Walmart in the garden center.

Also, to remove the ticks that are already on your dogs, you'll hear a bunch of things like cover it with rubbing alcohol, oil, or even burn it... I'll tell you from first hand experience, none of them work. You need a pair on long, flat tipped tweezers. Grab the tick at the base of it's head and slowly twist... You kind of have to test out each tick to see which way you need to twist it to get it off. Once it's off, splash some rubbing alcohol on the spot the tick was at. Also, if you're dog will let you, shave the fur off around the bite, so you can monitor it's healing. Ticks can carry some pretty nasty stuff, like Lime Disease. Good luck!

Use advanTIX on the dogs and cats, apply it every 2 weeks until everything improves. and inorder to get rid of the ones in the house, take all animals out and bomb it. Theres not much you can do to the yard, because other yards are infested.

Im a vet tech, and in florida there are constant tick outbreaks. Some houses have been so infested they climb the walls YUCK.

Advantix works best for me, also if you can have them dipped.

Zodiac makes a shampoo out called Triple Action Flea and Tick shampoo. Works WONDERFULLY, however, the one thing you have to do is once the animal is lathered up, allow the shampoo to sit on them for at least ten minutes and then be sure to rinse the animal off COMPLETELY!

I do NOT recommend a dip unless it is done by a vets office. Not even a good groomer should do this. If the dip is not diluted properly or is not washed off completely it can and WILL kill animals.

Advantix is the one to use for ticks. Just remember NOT to place this on your pet for at least 24 hours AFTER A BATH. You need the natural oils to resurface on your pets coat prior to applying those things so it will be dispersed correctly and be affective.

No matter HOW MUCH you spend for treatments, if you do not treat outside it will do you no good.
Go down and get the flea and tick yard kit spray from Zema or Zodiac. Either will hook up to your hose and you can drench your yard with it. Make sure you go have way up any privacy fence or tree trunks as ticks will climb.

Best of luck to ya.

sorry, Also, if used outside, best thing after a week if it doesnt rain, is to go out an lite mist the grass so it balls up like clay, this will go in the ground an everything eats it an kills all ticks flea's roaches, spiders, etc

I know what you mean, at my old house, we were having such a problem. We were at the point that we vacuumed once a day, treated the carpets and everything in the house once a week, and sprayed the yard every three weeks with stuff that is suppose to last for months.

Since I have moved I have not had one problem with the cats or dogs.

Also I have tried both frontline and advantage, I have to say advantage works alot better.

Advantage doesn't kill ticks, it's not meant to, from what my vet told me, it is one of the best for fleas though. Anvantix (as someone mentioned above) is the form that kills ticks. Frontline never worked well for me either. Putting wood chips down (I live by woods that are infested) really helps too.

WE got an infestation a while ago it took forever to get rid of them! Advantix was the only treatment that worked!
Good luck!
