I have two questions, first one, are reptariums OK to use for the full time housing for suggies or just for play and travel time?? Next questions is, I have a large bird type cage right now, it has a barred bottom where the droppings can go, I was wondering if it is ok to take that out and let them crawl in the soft bedding that catches the droppings? (The barred bottoms rattles when they play in the wheel and it is really loud!)

Some people use Repts for full time housing... And for your second question it depends upon what bedding you use. If it's carefresh I believe it'd be okay. Pine or cedar, definately no.

I have heard of a few people who use reptariums for full time housing.
It would be okay to take the barred bottom out if you use bedding like carefresh, but you will probably have to clean the bottom more often.

If you take the bars out of the bottom, I suggest you use a bedding like fleece. That way they can't ingest any of the bedding and their nails can't get caught. Simply go buy some fleece and cut it to the size of your cage tray. You can shake it out or vacuum it daily and then stick it in the washer as needed

And yes, many people use Reptariums as permanent cages. I know Sugar_Mama has pictures of her awesome reptariums in the cage gallery (there's a link to it in her signature).

I actually put astroturf in the bottom of the cages. I lucked out and got an "end" for nothing. The carpet store was trying to get rid of it. I just take it out and rinse it through after I take a shower. To dry I put it on a rack and let it all drip into the tub and put new copies of the same cut in the cages. I rotate through. Ella is hilarious. She walks like it tickles her feet. As I ramble, I should mention that I kept the bottom of the cage in ella and Moose' cage because that's what I have the wheel strapped to. I just cut a slot in the astroturf, burned the edges (all are burned/melted to prevent unraveling) and poof. Snug fit and they can't even get under.

I've heard lots of good things about astroturf, too . It's good to hear a personal experience with it!

http://www.sugarglider.net/gallery/album242 That is the link to Rischa's (Sugar_Mama) cage gallery with pictures of her reptariums in it. She has done a really good job with her repts . I've used her pictures more times than I can count to get ideas for the rept I'm currently setting up for my new glider.

I use 2 of the 260g. reptariums as permanent cages. We love them. I also went to the dollar tree store and picked up the fleece blankets to put in the bottom of them. Each day I shake them out and every couple days I wash the blankets. I also use the 'glider kitchen' which keeps their mess inside. Works great for us. I pd. $89.00 online.

Aww....thanks for the compliments, Tracie! I'm glad someone's getting some use out of my gallery.

Also, I wanted to add...I agree, I think if you're planning to let them run around in their bedding it'd be best to use fleece for the same reason Tracie mentioned above. I suppose you could also use plain white paper towels, but there's still a risk that it could be ingested. The only difference would be that you'd be able to tell if they were to nibble on the paper towels where you wouldn't notice if you were using Carefresh. Still think fleece would be best.

OMG that does it, i have been cosidering getting a reptarium for a permanent home, and you just made up my mind, your cage is wonderful, my concern was how to hang things but it shouldnt be much of a problem, what i was wondering is, do the gliders nails get caught in the mesh? i know it depends on the glider but have you ever had a problem with them chewing on the mesh? if so what effect did it have on the mesh (is it chew resistant, or would it create escape holes?) i'm glad someone made this post when they did because i was about to ask the same thing.

I used one for a month and had no problems w/ nails or chewing... I would think that had they decided to chew, they probably coulda made a hole in it, but since they didn't, all was good

Thanks for the compliment, Jessica!

I have never had a problem with the gliders getting their nails caught in the mesh of the reptariums, but then again, I keep their nails trim. As for them chewing on the mesh, mine don't, but I don't have any chewers in repts. I do have a colony that has a few chewers among them, so they're not housed in a rept. That's the other cage that you'll see in my cage gallery. If you have chewers it's best to stay away from repts.

If you want a rept. like mine, you'll have to make the frame and order the replacement cover.

I did what sugar_mama did. Bought the cover and made the frame.(I used 1/2 inch pipe) I LOVE it. My munchkins dont chew on it, though i have seen them chew on other things. I just put newspaper UNDER the rept and vacuum out the inside every evening when i feed them. I put the cover in the washer once a week and change out the newspaper one or two times a week. And i wipe down the frame when i wash the cover. Its soo much cage for the $ if you make the frame yourself. When we travel i just take it apart and put it in this nifty bag my brother in law made me for christmas!
