She has never shown any desire to leave her large home before. It's a wonderful, ever-changing glider dream house. Our bonding has been extremely slowwwww. Recently, I've started to feed her mealies w/tweezers just inside, near her mess-hall. She absolutely loves them and has begun to trust me a little. So, every time that I open that door to change her food and water etc, she comes running down all excited looking for the goodies. It's so very cute. Well, this morning when I opened the door she came running down and climbed to the edge of the door and suddenly she was out and gone. She looked as surprised as I was. This old house is nowhere near glider-safe (yet) I ran around trying to take care of as many dangers as I could think of and the more that I did, the more I thought of (thanks to all of you here at GC) Move/think quick but don't panic. First, toilet and all drains, escape routes, holes around pipes behind water heater, closet, missing ceiling light fixture, can she squeeze out under the outside doors? Oh, I have way too much stuff everywhere. See her-lose her (repeat....)Oh no, ant poison everywhere (grape jelly & boric acid) Have I found them all? Don't chase her? Well, she sure isn't going to come strolling up to me! Try to entice her (when I can see her) Please, let there be some live mealies left in the cup. Nope. Where is that d--- order of mealies? Was expecting it days ago! Try a piece of walnut with the familiar tweezers cuz she can't see it in my fingers. Put fav yogurt in mess-hall, leave door open. Try to get her back to our room and close it up. She's under the bed now. Can she get inside the mattress/box springs? Can she get out? There are just too many ways for her to get hurt. This couldn't be any worse if it were my human child. What if she's gone? Don't cry. Don't panic. Remain calm. Think. It's been a long, frightening morning for both of us. Finally, she found her way back home, climbed up over the top, down and in the door. I can breathe now. She seems to be as relieved as I am. I sit and cry tears of relief. I post this. Now, I need to start taking care of all of those dangers that I thought of and the ones that'll continue to come to mind. Lesson learned? The fact that she hasn't done it before means nothing. For everything there is a "first time"
I want to thank all of you from the bottom of my heart for all that I have learned here at GC. Today, you may very well have saved a life!

Well, you are very lucky! Seems like she could have gotten into alot of dangerous things. You are doing the right thing by fixing those hazards right away. . Good luck with bonding!!

It's such a scare isn't it. My boyfriend and I let the sugar glider play in the living room curtains. I looked away for one minute and he was gone. We searched everywhere. I closed the toilet lid, and you name it I looked there. Finally, we turned off the TV and just listened. We finally heard the tiniest movement in the couch. He had climbed inside the couch. We had to tear off the cloth underlining of the couch to get to him. Dweasil (our glider) was so glad to see me that he glided right to me and let me pet him the rest of the night. Needless to say, he doesn't play in the curtains anymore.

It is always such a relief when they come home! Mine used to play in the living room, I'd doze in my chair all night, checking on them every so often, I'd wake up in the morning and they'd all be in their cages/pouches snug as bugs in a rug happily tired out from playing! Now, they don't get that much time, especially not unsupervised! They still get to run the living room, but now I'm usually right there. We've had our close calls, one morning, I had an escapee when I was cleaning cages, and had to leave the dog out all day till he decided to come back to me. We all have had our close calls! All we can do is prepare for the worst and do our best to see that the worst doesn't happen! Sometimes a good scare really opens our eyes to the real dangers and prevents a true disaster from happening! I'm glad she was ok, and you are ok!

I got to admit I was terrifed the first time mine got lose in a non-glider safe place. Then I got scared everytime mine gets lose in a non-glider safe place. Gizmo was the only one that used to do that, and he did it on a regular basis. It was his game of hide and seek, he would jump out when I opened the cage door into our non safe bedroom. He would have a ball watching me try and couch him back to the cage.
I sure miss that glider.
