About 1:30 a.m. the other morning, my boyfriend who was watching the babies while up doing homework, ran into my room and woke me up screaming that the babies had gotten on the stove... I thought the worst! Fortunately, the stove was not heated.. BUT, leaping from the kitchen table, to the chair, to the counter, the gliders landed nicely in a skillet full of bacon grease. Penelope had a nice piece of bacon fat in her mouth (which now thinking back was a pretty hilarious sight) and was in sugar glider heaven. I immediately started crying because their little bodies were covered in grease. I had never bathed them before and didn't really know if I could or if it would put them in shock.. All I knew was that it couldn't be good for them to be licking all of that grease off of themselves..(Humans can have a heart attack from too make grease.. these gals were probably covered in twice their mass!) I tried wiping some of the grease off with water, but it didn't seem to budge.. I finally fed them some alternative treats to take their minds off of their slippery little furs and made sure they had plenty of water. I woke up about 7 a.m. to check on them and thank God they were alive. I called the vet first thing and he said to wash them in Dawn Grease Fighting Dish Detergent! So.. I did! 30 minutes and hundreds of scratches to my hands later, my babies emerged looking like drowned rats. Bless their little hearts. They still seemed a bit shocked and were acting very out of character.. So here I go crying again. I put them in a fleece pouch and set them in my lap on a heating pad for a couple hours. They finally go to sleep so I put them back in their cage. That evening when they emerged from their pouches, they were the old fluff balls I remembered! What an ordeal!

Becky, that would have been one great clip of film taken with a camcorder.....can see it now on Animal Planet's Funniest Pets. Australian Sugar Gliders in the frying pan and all greased down with bacon hanging out of their little mouths! And I bet the little campers thought they hit pay dirt! "Yummy Yummy. Tis great tasteing food...if only our BML was soooo good".

Yes, a bath was in order with a bit of grease cutting dish soap. Poor babies...I am sure they did not appreciate your efforts.

Actually this isn't the first babies covered in grease/oil incident! But, man, they sure know how to make our hearts stop, don't they! Glad to hear they all came out of their big adventure ok, none the worse for the wear, I feel sorry for you tho, I can imagine how your hands and arms must look!

Oh my goodness!
What a mess!

Might I make a suggestion...
Any time something like this happens and a Glider gets into grease... a safe way to clean them is like this...
Give them a bath in room temperature orange juice... its non toxic, tastes good , and cuts grease... then give them a nest box/bucket/bowl/etc..and throw in a bunch of t-shirt scraps to sleep in... they will burrow around and get even cleaner.

Our beloved Snakeman (Tony) had a little girl glider that got into grease once (jumped into the fry daddy!) and he was haveing a hard time getting her clean...I emailed him and suggested the orange juice and it worked.

I remembered when Toni wrote about the incident with the fry daddy. But last night...could not remeber whose glider it was that jumped in.
