#42194 - 04/04/05 02:16 PM Barking at night

My glider barks in the early hours of the morning (anywhere from 2-7), though I spend time with him before I go to sleep at night. Does this mean I'm not spending enough time with him? Should I wake him up during the day to do so?

I also think he has only four toes on each back paw O.o..

he is barking because he wants to know where you are and wants to play. Doesnt necessarily mean that you do not spend enough time with him, but just that he wants to play at that time. The sound you hear is a troup loclization vocalization (no rhyme intended). Might want to move him out of where you sleep, and get him a buddy.

Yep.... Mine do the same thing usually about 3:30am. If i step in their and talk to them for a minute usually they will stop.I guess its just showing them where i am so they stop barking. Now the other day when i brought Sugar home he barked alot.I guess he was calling for his old mama.

My guy did that a couple of times. I took him out both times and played with him, but after almost falling asleep at work I just leave the TV on or turn the radio on at night. It seems to be working.

Our gliders bark during the night as well. We read somewhere that it is very common. ( and kinda cute )

Gliders often bark for attention. If you go in and give them a treat everytime they bark, you're letting those lil furries train you to do exactly what they want . What little hams! Just because he's barking doesn't mean you don't give him enough attention. I've played with my kids for four or fives hours straight, put them up, and within an hour they're barking their little heads off. Sometimes I think they just like to hear the sounds of their own voices .

A lot of times people will keep the TV, a nightlight, or the radio on near the gliders' cage to cut down on barking. Mine bark a lot and I'm used to it by now, but if they bark for a long time I'll go turn on a 25 watt blue light bulb near their cage and they'll quiet down. They'll quiet down within a few minutes and I won't hear a peep from them as long as that light is on. Odd little guys, aren't they?

I've also noticed that mine will bark if they can see a cat watching them. The cats never get close, but if Stoli sees a kitty watching from the other side of the room, he freezes and barks until the cat is gone. This leads me to believe that they bark to warn each other of danger or to communicate. I could be totally off base there, just sharing my experience .

[:"green"]From my experience, gliders bark for a number of reasons... The primary reason is to find out where their clan is (i.e., you &/or their buddies). Other reasons they bark: 1) if they want something else to eat; 2) they are happy; 3) they are warning about something (though not as common a reason)...
Personally, I love it when my gliders bark! Usually it's because they're happy & want me to play, too...
